Convergence All of a sudden we have red outlines on everything to the point you can't even watch tv. When we try to adjust the convergence, we can't get the line up on the crosshair. Sometimes there are several red crosshairs all over the screen.. The TV is only about 4 years old and we are in a pretty remote area of Idaho where TV repair is quite expensive. Any tips on other things we can try. Thanks, Nita

I have the same problem. We cannot reset the red convergence with our remote anymore. It is horrible to look at. I saw you mentioned something about the ICs, but I'm not sure where they are or what they look like. I am hoping it is a small problem and can be fixed at home.

We are having the same problem. The red convergence it terrible and we cannot reset it with our remote anymore. It had be mentioned something about the ICs. I'm not sure where they are at and are they easy to check. I am hoping to fix this problem at home and not have some drive several miles to look at it, since we live in a rural community.

FIrst of all, this is a CRT based set. There are 2 convergence ICs that either have bad connections at the pins or are defective. If you can solder, try resoldering the pins first. If that fails, replace the ICs. These are large black ICs attached to a heatsink and should be marked STKxxx.

Keep us posted.

If the convergence can't be adjusted with the remote are if a tech comes out and he can't adjust it from the back of the set or the SAM replace the SSM part number 313503710091 that's where the convergence adjustments are done.

Hooked up PS3 to system and when watching DVD's the right side of the picture is blurry and appears doubled, like an old 3D movie without the red and blue glasses. When watching TV everything looks fine.

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

Rca big screen 5-8 years old, power shut off this morning while watching then when I powered it back up now blurry and has a red and green outline around everything onscreen

If you have the original remote to that tv, click on menu, then select set up from the on screen menu, then select convergence. you might see auto convergence as well as manual for blue and red convergence.

If you see Auto, select it, this will line up your tubes.

If no auto convergence, you will have to select each one, and follow the instructions to aline your tubes.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. Screen hazzy and issue with blue convergence

bad convergence would cause show to look as if it was supposed to be a 3-d movie, if a bulb was going out then people would look purple blue -green,or some other off color, so likely the green bulb is going out from the color of the people you described.

Samsung HCM5525W TV red blue outlines on images

The Samsung has bad convergence IC's most likly. This should be repair ONLY by a trained technician as a TV set is not a place to experiment or tinker with because of the extremly high voltage inside. This repair should cost you in the range of 250 to 400 bucks . Good Luck
