Changing Hard Drive

Hello dleahy,

Thank you for your message.

I haven't changed the hard drive yet but just wanted to know whether I would have to buy new licences for my Windos XP and Microsoft Word programs.

Since my original posting this morning, I found a Microsoft Small Business website, so went on there and asked the same questions. A short while later a lady from Microsoft telephoned and explained that there shouldn't be a problem as it is only when the motherboard is changed that problems occur.

As you see, I now have the answer and have now ordered a new hard drive so fingers crossed all will be ok.

Thank you again for your interest in my posting, I am very grateful to you for taking the time to add to my posting.

With a bit of luck we might be able to clone the old drive.

it only takes a short time, you don't lose any data, software, no drivers to search for.

Cons: PCs will alwats run faster with a fresh reload, cloneing takes the "bad with the good"

Hello there,
First of all, i will say you should try another USB cable in connecting the hard drive to your computer. Or you try to connect it to another computer. This time, ensure you try to use a 7.0 USB cable.
Sometimes the cable might be bad and will just connect but not read you hard drive. It happened to a modem of mine. Until i changed the USB cable was when the computer was able to read the modem.
Hope the hard drive did not fall or hit any hard object.
Hope this helped. Goodluck Elect_Comp

Disk boot failure.insert system disk. Message that appear a boot up

first of all check in your BIOS whether your motherboard is detecting your hard drive or not.
If yes try installing window.
If not it means your hard drive is not detected , Open the case and check hard drive data cable is connected properly or not, and hard drive is getting proper power supply.
you can try changing hard drive data cable and power connector from.

If still you are facing the same problem that means your hard drive gone bad.

SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: st9100824as-(s1)) WARNING: Immediatelly back-up your data and replace you hard **** drive. A falure may be imminent. Press F1 to continue

Hi sqarrab,

A SMART Drive failure indicates that your hard disk is about to die. Sometimes it will last a few says, sometimes even months. Refer the link below for more information.

I suggest you keep a backup of all your data as soon as possible. Once the hard disk fails, there's nothing you can do to get your data back. To get rid of the message, buy a new hard drive, and then copy back all your data.

If this information was helpful, please rate it.

Thank you for using fixya,

I went to best buy and bought a new HDD after they told me it was bad. I put it back into the metal gear box and it just kind of clicks and when i connect to computer it doesn't see it. suggestions??

I want to say this kindly ... do yo know what you are doing? You can't just change the hard drive ... there are many steps to changing the drive to make it work ... like assuring it is the master drive ... like formatting ... like installing an operating system, if appropriate.

Now that they sold you the drive (who is to say your old drive was faulty?????) they will fix it for you for a new fee.

External Hard Drive Not Regonized

I can help you with this. Follow these instructions--> Start-->Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Computer Management, under the Storage section select "Disk management". Locate the external harddrive, and then change the drive letter.

Select the external drive. Right click, and select "Change drive letters and paths"-->Highlight the driveletter to change-->Click the "Change" button-->From the drop-down list choose an unused drive letter, and hit Ok.
The external drive should be recognized and accessible at this point. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank You, Raph30

"Operating System not found" message

The operating system not found using means just that the OS isn't correctly installed or the hard drive isn't being detected by BIOS. You may want to try reseating the hard drive in the laptop.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate this information.

Slow computer

YOu computer meet the average power requirement nowadays. HOwever if you want to make more faster performance. U only need to add more memory. 1Gb is faster than my computer which is 512Mb.

Ok adding more memory make the computer faster from 1 Gb to 2GB this is much faster.

hard drive is nothing to do with the performance of the system. its only a storage of all files.

but besure to know the model of the memory before you buy. it should be identical to your current memory.
