My ps3 which is an 80g i bought about 9 months ago is not recognising the ps3 games when you put them in sometimes they play for a little while then it sticks or as you put it in it starts but then an error message comes up (DISK ERROR DETECTED RETRYING OPERATION) however it is playing ps2 games

i had exactly the same problem with my PS3 i phoned up sony and they told me to do a full format which can be found on the home menu under settings and format. MAKE SURE BEFORE YOU DO THE FULL FORMAT BACKUP ANYTHING YOU HAVE SAVED TO THE PS3 INCLUDING GAME SAVES AS THIS WILL ALL BE WIPED FROM THE PS3'S HARDDRIVE.
the full format takes a couple of hours and once this is done you can try a disc (game or movie). this may make it work although with mine it didn't. i phoned up again and they said they would replace the PS3 as it was still under warranty.
i was told that the full format is the last option before replacing the console, so if your out of warranty period you''ll have to hope it works.
put the sata drive in the new ps3, then offload the information onto an external discdrive through the settings menu. it is the back up option. then put the new drive back into the ps3, reconect the external drive, and go to settings, and i beleive it is called something like restore, and you can retreive the saved data from the external drive and put it on the new ps3 drive. hope that helped. please tell me if it did or not.
Does your PS3 have the latest update? If you don't have your PS3 connected to the Internet you will need to go to the Sony website and download it to your computer. From there you can burn it to a CD or a Memory Stick to transfer the install file to the PS3. Here is the link to the 2.52 update...
No the ps3 is compatible for ps2 games NOT ALL OF THEM!
The only difference is the special editions like the spiderman one the mgs special edition ect... OR if you have a 20gb ps3 it does not have internal net or the 1080i feature!
A new hard drive and 15 minutes and you can update your ps3 to 120gb 250gb and so on!
