You buy no parts

You diagnose the problem
to find something wrong

How about looking in the owners manual

I do not know about Maytag Dryers, but the washers
have a diagnostic manual in a bag under the cabinet,

There is a technical sheet inside your dryer's cabinet. You can usually find it by accessing the rear of your dryer. All the fault codes should be explained in this paperwork.

My Maytag dryer model number MDE5500AYW has lights on, but won't switch settings. It is stuck in time dry at 18 minutes. Yesterday it was on sensor dry 47 minutes. Do I need a new control board inside...

OK, your control board and LED are integrated, so you will need to just replace the control board. I would try a hard reset before replacing the board. Pull the plug or, shut down the appropriate breaker switch for 5 minutes. Re apply power after the 5 minutes are up. if you continue to experience this fault, replace the control board asap.

Dryer squeal @ start up; access

Below are some links, courtesy of www.repairclinic.com, that will assist you in diagnosing/repair of your dryer. You may have to enter your model number in the search box to access some of the information.

Below is a parts breakdown/disassembly procedure for your dryer.

It sounds as if you have a dry rear drum roller. Check the above link first for parts and teardown.

You can also obtain more appliance information at my website, www.homemanagement.services.officelive.com

If your dryer is noisy, check these:

Rollers
Idler pulley
Glides
Rear drum bearing
Blower wheel
Rollers Many dryers use rollers or wheels to support the clothes drum. When these rollers are worn, they can be noisy. You should replace the whole set of rollers at the same time.

Idler pulley Dryers have a tension or idler pulley that keeps tension on the main drive belt. When it's worn, it can be noisy. When that happens, don't lubricate it. Just replace it.

Glides Many dryers use nylon or plastic glides at the front of the clothes drum for support. When these are worn, they can be noisy. When that happens, replace them.

Rear drum bearing Some dryers support the clothes drum in the rear with a center spindle instead of rollers. The spindle may be a ball-and-socket type support or a shaft through a sleeve. When the components are worn, they may squeak, squeal, or rub. You can't repair them. Just replace them when they're worn.

Blower wheel Your dryer's blower wheel pulls air over the heat source, through the clothes drum, and past the thermostats, then pushes it out the exhaust duct. The blower wheel, which is usually plastic, may wear out over time. But if it's noisy, it may simply be clogged with lint. Clean the blower and test to see if the dryer is still noisy. If it is, you probably need to replace it.

NOt drying clothes like it should

Has air flow problem, check to make sure the vent going to the outside is not blocked. If it isnt, you should be able to take off back cover of dryer. Should be a duct that air goes through, take it apart and make sure there is no lint in bottom of it. I had the same problem and that fixed it.
