Right click on the 'My Computer' icon, go to 'Manage', then click on 'Disk Management', and see if you need to either format the drive, assign a drive letter, or if it's recognized correctly. Most of the time, you'll find the drive in here just needs to be formatted, or it needs to be assigned a specific drive letter.

Having a problem with an external HDD. Although it is getting power - any OS cannot seem to pick up the HDD. This means I cannot access any of my files. It is a Samsung G2 Portable HDD.

Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the computer to detect a USB device when it's plugged in. Try rebooting the computer while the external hard drive is connected and powered. Then wait a few minutes before we start worrying. The last resort is to contact Samsung and tell them their product is defective - they might have a fix.

How to format excelstor hardisk?

For your specific operating system, assuming that Windows is running, locate Admistrative Tools -> Disk management.
You should see Disk 0 or Disk 1 with your Excelstor 80GB drive: if you do not have a partition, create one or more partition, assign drive letter(s) and then format using the context menu.
If you do not see the drive in the Disk Management screen, then your Bios has not been setup properly or your drive is not connected properly.
Hope it helps.

Harddrive problems

Was this 80GB cloned (copied) from an old 30GB disk?

Open Computer Management window doing this:

Start button - settings - control panel - administrative tools - computer management.
In the window that open, on the left hand side pane, expand Storage and click Disk Management. On the left hand side window, lower pane you should see a list of disks. See Disk 0,Basic <disk size>, Online. Do you see the 80GB as disk size? To the right you would see a series of boxes. Probably you see (C:) 30GB NTFS Healthy (system). Do you see to the right of it a box with 50GB (unknown partition)?

If so, you do have a 80GB disk, but only 30GB is a recognized partition by Windows. You can still use the the unknown partition. Post back here if you need instructions.

Can't See HDD in Windows Explorer

Afraid Excelstors hard drive repair tool requires the drive to get wiped to fix the errors not like seagate or western digitals, only thing worth trying is put in a windows xp disc and boot off the disc, Press R on the first screen to do a repair in like dos mode. it will take you into a black screen with a dos prompt, type this in CHKDSK C: /R then press enter it will take about 30min-1hr but has a good chance of getting the drive to read.. once complete take out xp disc and restart pc all the best John
