Re: processor speed loss
It's possible that the XP is using the extra resource or processor usage, and there isn't anything that you can do. However, It's also possible that this machine was configurated for 2000, and that it just needs drivers for XP. You can start by going to IBM's support site and doing a bios flash to the most recent bios, and checking for a chip set driver update, patch, or for for XP. Also check for any processor speed stepping drivers or updated drivers. Try this and let me know.

You need the next three letters or numbers after 2628 - ___ Go here http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?selector=expand click on laptop and tablets click on thinkpad A series then A21m Then 2628 then the next three then your operating system then voila there you have all your drives and any update for your thinkpad Bookmark so you will always be able to fix what ever may be wrong.. Did the laptop you got come at least with a windows XP cd? If so boot the laptop off of that and try to install Windows XP and see if it goes thru. Just make sure during the installation you tell it to delete the partitions first and then let it go thru that way you know for sure the hard drive is clean at that point.
the good news is that u can still get a replacement drive for your laptop P/N FRU P/N ThinkPad 24x-10x CD-ROM Ultrabay 2000 Drive
Yes try impactcomputer.com http://www.impactcomputers.com/ibmparts-ibm-thinkpad-thinkpad-a21m-parts-ibm-thinkpad-a21m-2628--15-0-sxga--parts-storage.html
the bad news the drive might not be installed or is faulty ....in which case you will have to get someone u know with a contact number and knows about computer hardware to help u replace the drive...
It must be a processor overheating problem, check the vents are not restricted and if the fan is always on or never comes on because of a faulty temp setting then theres a overheating problem and the processor will shut down before any damage.
