do you have an upto date antivirus/spyware programme, there may also be too many programmes running on start up, click start, run, then type msconfig and press enter.

Next a box will pop up, look in the startup folder and untick any programmes that you don't need to start up with windows.

Also you may need more memory

Desktop computer starts and run slow

You can speed up your PC with the help of these tips given below:-

1) Defragment & Optimize files in the hard disk regularly.
2) Disable the unwanted start up programs.
3) Defragment the registry if needed.
4) Uninstall unnecessary programs (Games, crapware, toolbars, etc.)
5) Install latest Windows updates.

For task 1, 2 and 3 use reliable program like I always use "RegInOut" for the best performance. Remember that Windows need above to be optimized from time to time. So regular maintenance is required.

How to speed up your computer using a disk defragmenter

Computers slow down after a while. Most of the time they can be revived by following some simple maintenance procedures.

One of the biggest culprits to a slow computer is a fragmented file system. As files are written and overwritten constantly, parts of files get written to different parts of your hard drive. In order for the computer to read these file, it has to jump all over the hard drive which slows your computer down. In order to fix this, it is recommended that you maintain at least a minimum of 10% free space on your hard drives. Then at least once per month, run a disk defragmenting program such as the built-in one that comes with Windows, or a 3rd party program such as Jeroen Kessel's MyDefrag.

Download the latest version from the Downloads page (currently v4.3.1), run the install program and leave the default components checked, but make sure to check the box for the Screensaver program under Additional Tasks if you want your computer to defragment your harddrive while your computer is on and idle (when you are not using it). This is my favorite option and saves you from running a full defragment every month. If you select this option, the screen saver selection dialog opens up and you need to select the Defrag screensaver and click OK.

If you do not use the screensaver option, Run MyDefrag from your Start/Programs menu. Select the option for System Disk Monthly then click drive C and click Run. You can continue to do other tasks while it is running.

Extremely slow running

Slow computer If you have a virus program installed, it is most likely is running a scan on your hard disk. It can slow down your computer especially if you have a large hard drive. After scanning is completed then the computer will be faster.
To make your computer (hard disk) lean and mean, uninstall any programs you do not use.
Also you need to maintain your hard disk by running Disk Cleanup this will remove old temp files and old compressed files etc.
This will reduce the number of files the virus scanner has to scan. Plus running Defrag. this makes your files contiguous so the system can access files off the hard drive quicker because it does not work as hard.. Disk Cleanup and Defrag should be carried out at least once a month.
If you have 512Mb of RAM installed then installing more RAM will speed up your computer. After installing your graphics card, you may need to disable the built-in graphics card in the BIOS for the new graphics card to work properly.

My computer is very very slow.

Block the Startups and Services

When your computer is started up, there might be a number of programs and services running in the background. Some of them would be update checkers, error reporters and the rest are necessary tools like your antivirus etc.

The idea is to disable running the start-ups and service that you no longer need.

  1. Click Start ' Run.
  2. Type MsConfig and press ENTER.
  3. Disable the start-ups and services from the Startup and Services tabs respectively.
  4. Click OK button and restart the machine.

Defragment the Disks

My computer is slow to start up if the disks are too fragmented. Fragmentation refers to dividing a file into several parts which cause slow down in retrieving their contents.

The problem can be solved by defragmenting such fragmented disks using the Disk Defragmenter.

  1. Click Start ' All Programs ' Accessories ' System Tools ' Disk Defragmenter.
  2. Select all the drives.
  3. Click Defragment disks button.

Defragment your Registry

Registry is the database in your operating system containing significant configurations and information. Registry fragmentation too cause my computer is slow to start up issue.

Defragmenting the registry is too simple. You have to download a third party Registry Defragmenter software and install it o your system.

Set Up the System for Best Performance

Setting Windows for maximum performance rather than best appearance could fix the problem. Whenever my computer is slow to start up I perform the same task. The steps are provided below:

  1. Right click My Computer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Click Advanced System Settings link at the left hand side of the window.
  4. Click Advanced tab.
  5. In Performance frame, click Settings button.
  6. Select the option Adjust for best performance and click OK ' OK.

Disinfect the System

Sometimes computer is infected by a virus and I feel that my computer is slow to start up.. Change the existing antivirus software and download a good one. Update its virus definitions and conduct a full scan through it. Remove all the infected files that found.

Runing slow, some time not responsive.

Below are some useful tips for making your PC's performance better. Please follow the below steps and fix your problem.
Eliminate Viruses and Spyware 1 . Run your antivirus program. There may be something slowing your computer that you can remove. It is a good idea to run your antivirus program every week.
2 . Remove spyware. Run a good spyware tool at least twice a month.
3 . Use a pop-up blocker, if you have one. Check your antivirus program.
Dispose of the Extras 1 . Delete your document files for anything you no longer need. Saved pictures, audio and video files in particular can slow your computer.
2 . Remove unwanted programs from the Control Panel area. Old toolbars or games the kids downloaded off the Internet are a good place to start.Look for software you no longer use, such as the old printer you threw out last year.
3 . Clean out your email. Old messages are a constant drain on your computer's resources. Go through every folder, deleting everything you do not need. Leave no mail! Finish by emptying the Deleted Items folder.
4 . Turn off unnecessary programs. Check your task bar for icons that show running programs. Disable anything you are not currently using.
Run Maintenance 1 . Run the Disk Cleanup tool located in your Control Panel. (Windows only. For other operating systems, please check the Resources section below.)This will remove temporary files, cookies and unnecessary components to speed up your computer.
2 . Defragment your computer. Defragging takes some time, but will speed your computer significantly. You can find the tool in your Control Panel.Run it monthly.

Hope the above information will be helpful to you. Thanks for using Fixya.

My machine runs real slow

Its not the room on your system that slows down the computer it is the running programs in the back ground that you dont know are running, there are many programs that will run during the normal operations of your system you weill be able to view the programs from the system comfiguration utility built in to Windows,
Step 1 is to click start go to RUN and type MSCONFIG and press enter.
Step 2 look at the tabs the tab that reads startup is the tab you will click.
Step 3 see the check marks next to the each of the lines of information, click on them one at a time to remove the check mark,
Now click apply and OK and the system will will ask you if you woiuld like to restart choose yes.
Your system will restart and when it come back up ut will let you know that the system comfiguration had been used there is a emty box on that screen and you will need to click to place the check mark there, do that and then click OK, this will speed thigs up.

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 w/Windows XP updated to SP3. I have had this computer for years w/no problems all of a sudden it runs real slow, is slow to open programs, internet, etc... The error log says...

You might want to try running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag Utilities.....a bad block is usually marked as bad by the operating system if Disk Defrag sees it. Also, look at the properties of your hard drive to see how much free space is available, you may be running low on space after 2 years. If the disk utilities do not fix the slowness, we would have to look for other culprits....Good Luck
