Plug your nuvi into your PC. Go to the Garmin.com website and log into your account to see your map information. You can go to your account and see the map downloads and reinstall it from there. Or you can download their software "Garmin Express" on your PC. Run the software while your Garmin is plugged into your PC and it will check for any updates for you.
Assuming it is completely and fully charged - just TURN ON your device. Let it locate the satellites. Once it acquires the position [LONG & LAT] it will show you the position on the map. Now go to WHERE TO to input your destination. Choose the CITY, the STREET and the NUMBER or - if your map supports - you can input the ZIP CODE of your destination. In SETTINGS you have to choose what kind of route do you wish [FASTEST, SHORTEST etc.], what kind of roads to avoid [FERRIES, TOLL ROADS etc.] and from now on you are good to go!

You are confusing map updates with POIs (Points of Interest). Garmin does not keep up with restaurant openings and closings, to the best of my knowledge. Updating your maps will give you the latest street information (such as new subdevelopments, one-way streets, newly opened bridges, etc.) but will not let you know that the KFC closed or that the Chalet de Alpina closed last year. Your POI information is current as of the initial programming of your unit. You can enter POIs manually, if you chose to do so, but they will only be good as long as you keep up with them.
Nothing. Not all business's will show up. Try putting in their address's. Also do you have the latest maps. New maps are released about every 4 months. I bought the life time maps upgrade for $99. Or, you can buy new maps when you want, but the are about $80 each. Ouch on that!!
