I push the start button on my dryer and as long as I hold it in it works , but starts to smell a bit like electrical burning. As soon as a few seconds goes by it makes a click & shuts off and this happens while i hold the button in. When it sits a bit you can do it all over again as it resets itself. If you push the start and let go immediately it shuts off .

burning smell is because the drum is not rolling and the motor is trying to turn, hopefully it did not damage the motor: more then likely it the drum rollers/glides, might want to check the idler arm here is a website that will help. depending on fast you need your dryer a good and cheap place to buy parts is on eBay, of course they can be purchased locally, Good Luck Tim:
Sounds like you have a bad drive motor. All the symptoms point to this, intermittent no start ,noisey when it does run, and most of all burning smell, what you are smelling is the covering they use to protect the windings of the motor, this could be a potential fire hazardI would get this repaired soon or if the unit is old enough to justify replace it
Go to www.repairclinic.com and enter your model number and it will show you all your parts, but I suggest you change your thermostats and basically have the dryer cleaned out of possible lint build up on the interior
It sounds like the motor has burned up or is burning up is why you are getting that smell. There could at the same time be a wire that has come loose or burned off that is causing it not to come on.
