Hi. The battery on my Thinkpad R31 laptop doesn't charge. I've tried 3 difference AC adapters (all of which work fine on other laptops) and 2 different batteries including a brand new one, neither of which charge. I guess I need to change the onboard power management hardware ? Is there a FRU/CRU I should replace to do this ?

SOURCE: T30 2366 8GA After removing AC Adaptor battery icon shows Charging and working on AC

there is a switch in the plug end to the back of your comp its like a little swinging door that when you unplug out of back of comp this switch engages battery now if you unplug just from wall its going to see these 2 things the doors not shut but i have to keep working so it sets aside the plug still recognizing it of course but running off the battery trying to still find out why the powers not there but the plug is still plugged in and it will continually search until it reaches its falt point of dead battery
its like a battery backup for your system it gets unplug but wants to know where the power is

now in reference to the little swinging door i call it its a power over relay in your comp for some reason its not closing properly to allow battery to run by self
this is usually just a switch that needs adjusted in the motherboard configuration

Maintenance manuals for both systems are on www.lenovo.com/support, under the publications section. But without looking at it, I would say no, the cables will not work.

SOURCE: Thinkpad T43 wont get any AC power

I've run into this many times with IBM machines. The power management chip on the motherboard has failed. Unfortunately, you will have to replace the motherboard in order to fix the problem.

SOURCE: ibm thinkpad no power with ac power adapter but works with battery

If prior to this it works intermittently with the AC adapter, it means the connection from the adapter power unit to the motherboard was lost and this is a typical problem with the Thinkpad. It needs a re-soldering job and not something that one can do without a proper repair manual on how to open the laptop. Try googling your problem and find out if someone has the same experience and managed to resolder by him/herself.

SOURCE: IBM ThinkPad R40 No PowerUp

If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.

I have IBM thinkpad when i want to open the laptop sometime its open but sometime it could not help me to solve this problem

Hi,

Im very sorry to hear that, please follow these simple steps for you to be able to isolate the exact problem.

1. Removed the battery.
2. Connect the laptop directly to the power outlet without using the battery just for the meantime.
3. Turn on the laptop. If the laptop is able to power on, that means that the AC adapter is working fine as well as the DC port. If the laptop is not able to turn on, it maybe the AC adapter itself or the DC port.
4. Try to use another AC adapter if possible, make sure that that AC adapter is working fine. If the laptop is still not turning on, the problem is with the DC port itself. In that case, you will need to replaced the Motherboard itself.

Hope this will help...Thank you for using Fixya...

Hi i need help plz, i've my laptop do not power when i plug the ac adapter ther' is no ligth

You may have a DC connector problem:

Symptoms of a broken power jack
1. If you wiggle the power cord or the AC Adapter connector on the back of the laptop, the power LED and battery charge LED start to flicker.
2. Battery will not charge in the laptop.
3. Laptop runs fine off a charged battery.
4. With the AC Adapter connected the laptop appears to be dead.
No power LED or battery charge LED activity.
5. Laptop randomly powers off without any warning.

If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by re-soldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it

My Thinkpad A30 replacement battery is not charging and is not even being read by my battery miser program. Does anyone know why?

Hi,

Welcome to FixYa!

Im very sorry to hear that, it may also be the AC adapter that you are using. Worst is the DC port, please follow these simple steps for you to be able to isolate the exact problem.

My battery doesn't recharge laptop when laptop is plugged in . What to do and at what approximate cost if new battery needed?

Hi there! There are two possible causes of the problem - it's either your battery or your AC Adapter. To diagnose whether or not it is your AC Adapter, test it this way. Does your laptop function with the power cord plugged in and the battery out? If this is the case, your AC adapter is fine and your battery is done. To replace the battery, expect somewhere between $75-$175. Here is a link to the cheapest battery site I've found so far - I use it for work all the time. http://www.batterydepot.com/mfg/TOSHIBA/LAPTOP-BATTERIES
If your laptop doesn't work with just the AC adapter plugged in, then that is your problem! AC Adapters are cheaper than the batteries. They can be purchased here for around $50: http://www.buylaptopadapter.com/toshiba-adapters.html
Make sure you match the model number on the bottom of your laptop perfectly with the model number of the battery or AC Adapter! Good luck! Alex

Battery is not charging.

Ifthe laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be wornout. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cyclesand will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up atall. ORThe battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected thebattery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. Ifthe battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to bereplaced. Whenyou connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED lightup? If not then - The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's powersocket could be faulty. Check power adapter's DCplug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltageshould be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on thebottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that isprinted on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK thenconnect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/batterycharging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's powersocket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position thisLED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a drysolder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but itrequires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket andrepair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

Hi there.I ve got this strange problem with my satelite Toshiba A200 1AB laptop.the problem is with the battery actually it wont charge when I plug in the charger with battery in it.But when I extract the...

Is the AC Power adapter the original adapter of the laptop? If it is, try to drain the battery and charge it for 8-12 hours without using or opening the laptop just charge it. After charging, remove the power adapter as you open your laptop. Make this way a habbit of using and charging your laptop to make the charging and battery life last long.

Acer Travelmate C112TCi- Won't power on

Hi,
Remove the adapter and the battery from the laptop.
Press the power button and hold it down for 20 seconds(without the battery or adapter plugged in to it). This process is called POWER DRAIN.
Now connect only the adapter and try to turn it on.
If it starts up, there is no problem with the adapter or the laptop.
If it doesn't, it can be either the adapter or the laptop.
You will have to check it with a different adapter to confirm which one is faulty.

The second case is that the computer powers on only with the adapter.
Then you can put the battery back in and try powering it up.
If it doesn't work, try connecting the adapter too.
If still it doesn't work, its a faulty battery.

Sometimes after doing a power drain, the computer will work fine.
If you have any more issues, feel free to contact me.
