You need the recovery cd that shipped with your laptop if you do not have this cd and there is no recovery partition on the hdd you can contact the manufacturer (HP) and they will ship you one for around $15.00 here is the link to hp's support site follow the links to contact us and call thier customer support.

There is no simple "factory restore" option on older PCs, you will need the operating CD or disks and the relevant drivers. It is unlikely you will be able to get any of the original compaq software.

How to find factory settings partition

While many problems can be solved by less drastic measures, Compaq owners sometimes need to restore their computers back to factory new condition.

If the operating system becomes corrupt, or if the computer is struck with a persistent virus, restoring the PC to its original factory default settings is often the best way to deal with the problem.

While older Compaqs relied on restore CDs to restore factory settings, newer machines come with a recovery partition built into the unit.

Shut down the Compaq computer and wait for it to power off.

Press the "Power" button to restart it.

Press the "F11" key as soon as you see a black screen.

This will boot the Compaq into the recovery partition.

Follow the on-screen instructions to back up any user files before the recovery process begins.

Click "Next" to start the recovery manager and follow the on-screen instructions.

    Hope this helps.

How do I install more memory into my compaq armada 1700

You want to install memory on a 266 MHz PII?

A standard-configuration Armada 1700 has 32 MB of memory, and is expandable up to 160 MB.

Personally I don't recommend installing memory on this computer (I'd just buy a new one considering this one is pretty old), but if you still want to install memory complete the following steps:
    1. Remove the battery, floppy and disconnect the power supply
    2. Underneath the computer, there are several screws with arrows pointing to them. Remove these.
    3. There is one more screw in the center of the bottom shell. Remove this.
    4. Remove the laptop's bottom shell.
    5. Turn the laptop over and remove the keyboard.
    6. The memory is located on the left-hand portion of the laptop and is enclosed in a memory bay. Snap out the memory and install up to 160 MB SDRAM, assuming you can get your hands on it in the first place.
When finished, replace the keyboard and bottom shells, as well as the screws that you removed. Congratulations!

You can restore your Laptop to Factory Setting by Tapping F11 at the startup which should bring the Recovery Screen. Follow the instructions to complete the Restore. If F11 does not work, you need to get Recovery CDs from HP.
