The microwave smelled like it was burning and the top on the outside felt hot. I left it unplugged for a while and when I plugged it back in it started running on its own, then started feeling hot on the top again.

Sounds like it over heated and you have some wires that might have melted and are causing this issue. In either case I would not recommend using it any more for fire hazards and would recommend you replace it. repairing these is not economical. You can unplug it and let it set over night then remove the case and see if you can find what has gone bad and decide if you need further info on a repair if you chose that route but i can't tell you what the problem is without seeing it or a better description of what is burnt.

Remove vent grille, then remove control panel. Check wire to cavity thermostat. Sometime wire bundle and small space causes poor terminal connections on this thermostat and will burn wire terminal. Cut off bad part of the wire, install a small terminal end, reconnect to thermostat. If thermostat is destroyed, also replace thermostat.

From the description you have provided, the magnetron has shorted. This a job for a professional because there is lethal voltages present that will kill.

This sounds as if the defrost is stuck on. This could be due to a failed defrost timer or
failure of the defrost termination thermostat in combination with the defrost timer stuck.
I would replace both at the same time. Some disagree on this, but if the contacts are
burnt in the defrost timer due to power surges, then the termination thermostat contacts
may also be burnt.

The microwave oven needs to be replaced, the magnetron is the most likely problem, there is also a high voltage transformer, capacitor, and diode that are potential issues. But by your description it sounds like more than one part is involved.

Smells like burnt wires

It is very possible it may have burnt wire or burnt capacitor. Remove unit, remove top cover and look inside to see if you see any burn marks or burnt wires. Also check fuse to see if it is good or not.

Burning smell from Microwave

If you clean any appliances always plug out the unit power supply do spray any liquid in the unit that can enter inside the control, instead just wipe it with rug not spray. In this situation you have to call for a qualified technician. Maybe there are some wires that burned or rust in the control that cause the short circuit inside the unit..
