IBM Thinkpad A22m 2628 Power On Problem`

Hello All.

Have a little problem with my Aunties IBM Thinkpad Laptop.....

Press the power on button, the screen gives a lightning style quick flash, the Hard Disk Drive emblem flashes for a split second, and there is some form of clicking noise which appears to be coming from under the Tab key, or in that area.

Boot screen will not come up at all.

Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

Regards Greg

Thanks for your feedback. The system boot screen does not even appear. All you get when you press the on button is a very quick light flash of the screen, the hard drive emblem (light) flickers very fast, and you here a faint clicking sound in the area of the floppy drive, but no system bootup. Nothing happens. Hence there is no way to boot the machine.

Anyway, thank you so much for your comments. It is gratefully appreciated.

    Regards Greg

I have the same problem. The solutions offered don't work as the machine won't boot to bios, or anything. Nothing. Just a click, then nothing. No power, no attempt to boot. I have replaced the battery, charger, and CMOS battery. Still, just one little click, then nothing.

My problem sounds the same too. I press the power on button and the only response is all the system lights flash on for a few seconds then they go off. The battery light remains on but the system never attempts to boot.

My screen remains blank. Even when I attempt to put a system recovery disk in the diskette drive, the machine doesnt respond.

    Just a blank screen.

That system is now old enough to suffer a harddrive failure.

If you have an emergency boot disk for floppy or optic drive, plug it in and see if the system then at least finishes something - heck, anything!

I hope she has been religious about backing up important stuff 'cause otherwise she may never see it again.

If IBM conforms to industry standards (they used to set them, I am a former 'IBMer') then you should be able to access the BIOS setup by pressing F1 or F2 right after power on.

In the BIOS setup which is not dependent on booting, take a look at the various menu items and find the one that offers the choice of boot sources.

I don't recall if that unit has a floppy or CD drive, but whichever you have can be chosen as the 1st boot source.

Chose then 'Save' or that and Exit.

This will allow you to boot up to some kind of screen.

I'm not saying that it is a useful screen but that will at least let you know that the rest of the system is working.

Notebook harddrives in the size that unit likely has are cheap and not that tough to replace if you are patient and a little bit handy.

To restore Windows though, you will need the original disks and the verification number for whatever software was included.

You might check IBM's (or Lenovo's) website for help since most major manufacturers seem to like screwing around with the installation procedures so generalizing here might not be productive.

BTW, in case you decide to DIY, once the case is open, check for a 'coin cell;' this is a flat battery somewhere in size from a dime to a quarter in size.

Replace it; they are available for a couple of bucks everywhere, including Mall-Wart.

After replacement of the HD and battery, you may have to enter Setup again to restore the boot-drive source to the HD.

Go to the Puppy Linux home page and download Dingo. Burn the ISO to cd. (read the how to's to learn how to burn an ISO if you don't already know how. Change the boot sequence to make CD Rom #1. Insert you new Dingo CD and power on. Follow the prompts and when the O/S is up and running, use Mount to look at your hard drive. If it will mount, you can extract you data to a USB hard drive. If it won't mount, then it is most likely DOA. You can keep using the Dingo CD. It's an awesome O/S. It runs solely in RAM. Should support all your hardware. I have the same model on my operating table right no with the same problem. Good luck.

I have IBM ThinkPad computer A22m 2628 and i have fogotten the BIOS do i get it fixed

Remove the main battery and unplug the CMOS battery if you can get to it or you can try to hold the on/off button for about 30 seconds. This should reset the BIOS to factory defaults and you can then get back in and reset a new password.
