Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Tappan Microwave I have an older Tappan Microwave oven. Model 56-4884-10/04334-... Manufactured January 1985. It was working fine, until I accidentally microwaved a tightly closed container with some water in it, causing the container to literally explode. When I saw this happening, the oven instantly went off, the door swung open, and a large cloud of steam poured out. The house circuit breaker switched off, indicated also by an out nightlight in the 2nd outlet. I turned the breaker back on, and the nightlight came on. I unplugged and plugged back in the oven. I pressed all of the oven's buttons to try to get some response, but nothing comes up on the LED panel and there's no beeps. I was wondering if it might be something as simple as a replaceable blown fuse in the oven, but looked around the oven and couldn't find where it might be. I also don't have the owner's manual. Can anyone offer me any assistance on if it could be inexpensively repaired or if it's ready for the junkyard? Thanks.

This one has a fuse located behind the control panel, either on the floor of the oven or near the door switches it seems.

There is also a thermal fuse that looks like this, but it's not clear where it is. They are usually located on the magnetron.

You can find some info by searching for the model as 56-4884-10-04 here.

How do I get rid of the noise?

Hello, Sarkis -

I found 4 descriptions of what may be causing the noise when you operate your microwave oven. See the information on all 4 possible causes here:
https://www.repairclinic.com/RepairHelp/How-To-Fix-A-Microwave/78-88--/Tappan-Microwave-is-loud-or-noisy

Note: Safety advice I have read regarding microwave oven repair is to have a microwave oven repaired only by an authorized repair technician. It is not do-it-yourself work.

Any repair might not be worth the cost compared to purchasing a new replacement. A microwave repair technician authorized to work on Tappan microwave ovens will be able to evaluate what is causing the loud noise and give you an estimate of the repair costs.

Note: If you find you need to replace your microwave oven, please be sure the old microwave oven is sent to electronics recycling.

Best wishes.

Tappan Convectionaire stove with built in microwave. Purchased in 1985. This is the 4th time the handle on the microwave door has broken off. We were able to replace it in the past, but I cannot find it...

we have the same tappan oven/microwave combination. We are looking for the knobs for this. Its a great oven, but we need these parts. Our microwave handle broke a long time ago and we had one made from wood. If you are going to ditch the old oven would you be willing to sell the knobs?

Tappan microwave

I think the membrane/button for the number 4 is stuck or broken. Due to the nature of a microwave my advice would be to entrust the work to a competant technician. Hope this helps.

Removing an old old microwave oven

look in the cabinet above the microwave, there should be 2 bolts which go through the bottom of the cabinet and screw into the microwave. remove these 2 bolts holding the unit steady then tilt the unit down and away from the wall.
