1841 router in rommon mode cannot install flash

Basically you will need to use TFTP to get the IOS back on. HERE is an article from Cisco that explains how to do it. I have done this before and even though it takes a while to reload the IOS (because in my case I had to use a serial connection at 9600 baud) it does work.

Rommon 2 ipaddress

With the set command.

Example:
rommon > set
PS1=rommon ! >
IP_ADDRESS=172.18.16.76
IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.192 DEFAULT_GATEWAY=172.18.16.65
TFTP_SERVER=172.18.16.2
TFTP_FILE=c2600-i-mz.bin

Alternatively you can XMODEM an image on there. However, that takes a long time, even if you increase your baud rate.

Also, on 2800 series routers you can put the image on a USB flash drive. However, the drive must be formatted as FAT and the partition size cannot be larger than 256 MB. This might work for an 1841.

Garbage in Cisco 1841

There are two things that can cause this:
  1. Incorrect serial settings. The default settings are 9600 baud, stop bits of 1, and parity 0. However, it is possible that these settings were changed. Likely, the baud setting may be higher as someone may have tried to XMODEM an IOS image onto the device and wanted faster speeds.
  2. Bad connection, cable
I hope this answers your question.

Scramble on my cisco 1841

It sounds like the IOS is corrupt, and you will need to copy the IOS back to the router again. It could also be the flash memory that has gone faulty.

If you can get to any prompt on the router and you have a copy of the IOS, you can re-flash the IOS and see if that helps. If you can not telnet to the device you will need to connect via the console port, and ZModem or similar the image to the router.

THis would depend on the version of IOS you are moving to. Most of the time an IOS upgrade provides additional functionality and the ability to see more memory and that sort of thing

I have cisco 1841 router stuck at Rommon> only IOS is ok,but still in this mode/.

what shows the following?

dir flash: If IOS is ok the follow the below step The router will guide you through changing the registry. You want to press y to chang the configuration. The only other change you need to make is the change to the console baud rate, set that to 7 (115200).

do you wish to change the configuration? y/n [n]: y
enable "diagnostic mode"? y/n [n]:
enable "use net in IP bcast address"? y/n [n]:
enable "load rom after netboot fails"? y/n [n]:
enable "use all zero broadcast"? y/n [n]:
disable "break/abort has effect"? y/n [n]:
enable "ignore system config info"? y/n [n]:
change console baud rate? y/n [n]: y

4 = 19200, 5 = 38400, 6 = 57600, 7 = 115200 [0]: 7
change the boot characteristics? y/n [n]:

Configuration Summary
enabled are:
break/abort has effect
console baud: 115200
boot: the ROM Monitor

do you wish to change the configuration? y/n [n]:
You must reset or power cycle for new config to take effect.

rommon 2>

3. When you reset the router in your console window you will see characters that you cannot read. You have to stop the session and set your baud rate to 115200. This will let you increase the speed that you use to transfer the file.
4. At the rommon prompt enter xmodem -c {filename}
5. When prompted, enter y to continue
6. From your hyperterminal prompt, click on transfter then send file
7. Select the IOS image then change the protocol to xmodem via the dropdown box then click send.
8. After the IOS has been downloaded, change the boot order by using the confreg 0x2102 command.

Auto backup IOS of router.

If you want to back up your Configuration on any Cisco Router, You can just use RANCID (http://adi-sunardy.net/2008/12/24/how-to-automating-cisco-router-switch-firewall-backups-on-fedora/).
Or, some other solution:
  • ciscowork

  • solarwind
  • cirrusmanager
Or follow these instruction: http://www.techexams.net/forums/ccna-ccent/22447-how-setup-tftp-server-backup-restore-2500-ios.html
