No problem buddy,

Like I said, don't beat yourself up on this thing. As long as you are patient with me and the time zone differential, I'll get you through. OK?

The test print in this case is generated from the printer itself, not the computer. It has its own little control panel where you can change its internal settings manually. For this test, the printer doesn't need to be hooked to the computer. This is done solely on the printer.
With that in mind, lets try it again.

The time measurement does not have to be exact. The average time to print a self-test is 30 seconds.

  1. Load the printer with plain, white paper.
  2. Press Setup on the control panel of the printer.
  3. Press the down arrow until Print Report is selected, and then press OK .
  4. Press the down arrow until Self-Test Report is selected, and then press OK .
  5. Begin timing when the paper feed rollers start pulling in the paper to start printing, not when the first noises come from the product. Stop timing when the printed page falls into the paper tray.
If the test page prints in less than or close to 30 seconds, the product hardware is working correctly.

Thanks for the info on the hard drive. That rules out workspace issues.
Still need the application you use to print your news letter.

When your done with the test print, try a simple print with Notepad. This will send a printjob in its simplest form, allowing us to adjust settings without formatting being a factor. To do this:
  • Click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, click Notepad.
  • Once it comes up, click File, New.
  • Type in a few lines of anything, gibberish, doesn't matter.
  • Click File, Print
  • The Print window should appear. Make sure your Photosmart is selected.
  • Click on Preferences. Another window with two tabs should appear.
  • Click the Paper/Quality tab
  • In the Quality Setting Box, Make note of the current setting and let me know what it was in your next response.
  • Change it to Draft
  • Below that, in Colors, choose Black & White
  • Click OK. The window will disappear.
  • Click Print
  • Make note of the printers behavior. Does it print the same way? Not at all? Does it print in an acceptable way? Let me know what it does. Specifically any differences in the way it has been acting.
BTW, thanks for creating the new thread. The others were getting pretty packed.

I'm off to work shortly for a few hours, Let you know as soon as I return.
Just take it slow David. You're doing fine.

Get back to me with the results or any questions.

Why doesn't it scan correctly?

Hi Anonymous,
This is really difficult to answer without seeing the problem first hand.
If you suspect a possible problem with the scan motor then you could switch off completely remove the mains plug. remove the scan glass carefully clean it (It's always worth a clean both side when you have it removed.
Now mark a tiny on the metal work where the sense carriage is parked up at, so you can move the carriage manually and return it back to the start position.
Now once you have axis to the sense carriage you can move it slowly and I mean slowly across the scan table all the way to the other side, it should be smooth running once your part way across you could take a look at the mirrors if your confident enough carefully clean them with a lint free cloth. (use, hardly any pressure on the cloth to remove any dust)
Now when you get to the point where your scanner stopped when under power, can you feel anything that would bring your mirror carriage to a halt at this point.
If it's nice and smooth then return it back to the starting mark you made earlier replace the glass and switch back on.
Once your printer has returned back to ready, try another scan
If not look for error messages and go from there.
Finally try and work through the service menu something that would checkout the action of the scan unit.
Good luck.

Sorry my printer is a Canon MF8180C laser and I could not find any information in what you provided to solve the blck marks around the edges of the page

Are the black marks down both sides of the page and if so what shape are they? Are they a sharp edge black mark or faint feathered mark?
You say the black marks are around the edges of the page, does that mean all 4 edges?
Also is it when you print from your computer or when you copy using the document feeder?
There are 3 possible causes but I need to know the answers to my questions.
