Sounds like the hard drive has gone bad.
On boot up, you have a chance to hit F12 for the boot menu.
Hit F12, and choose the diagnostics mode.
If it won't even go to that, it's a bad sign.
Reboot again, and hit F2 on the boot.
This will take you to the BIOS setup. Go down the list until you get to the hard drives and check to make sure it has the hard drive as the master on 0

If it fails again after theis, open the case and check all of the connections to the hard drive.
If it still won't boot after that, it's time to buy a new hard drive, format and reload everything.

Dell xps wont boot from dvd just cd

Sounds like you have only a CD drive. To boot DVDs you need to have a DVD drive installed. The computer probably came with a CD drive because Win XP came on a CD.

I have a Dell Dimension 5150. I was working on a project when the computer froze up. I had no choice but to turn off by the power button. Now it will not boot. Says there is no bootable device. I tried...

If you have a bootable xp disk handy set up the computer to boot from dvd-rom or cd-rom, put the disk in the drive and let it start setting up windows, Once on a blue page where you have a few options choose "R" for recovery console, it opens up a command prompt page. When in the command prompt page type: chkdsk c:/f and press enter, let it run. When finished restart hopfully its all back to working order.

<Change drive letter to the drive you use if it is other than c:>

You could also get another hard drive set as master and set the other as slave, load a copy of windows onto the c: drive and boot it up, all your files should now be on drive d: your original boot drive.

Let me know how you get on. thanks

Cant instal win xp on dell xps 700 help pls

1.) Insert Bootable CD.
2.) if not booting up, go into the Bios and change the bootable device list to list the CD or DVD drive first
3.) Disk should boot, if not then you have a problem with your CD (try another) or the CD/DVD Drive is not working properly.

Dell Optiplex GX50 won't load windows OS

Which cdrom is it? Is it a windows XP cd? This is an older PC? Does it have a floppy disk drive? Try downloading from Barts a bootable floppy disk, set boot order to floppy in BIOS, change to cdrom drive letter after booting to floppy (D:?)
got to I386 folder and set up from there.
More info would be helpful.

Dell Computer- Cannot find Cd-drive

Are you getting an error message saying "CD drive cannot be found"? If so, check the cable connected to your pc or swap that drive with a working cd drive.

Afterward, you have to enter the BIOS and change the BOOT order. Make the CD drive the first boot device and the HDD your second boot device. If the CD is a valid BOOTABLE Windows OS CD you will see the following option directly after the bios loads: "Press any key to boot from cd...."

Please remember that the OS CD only has the Windows Operating Software and will not provide you with the necessary drivers to run all the hardware on your PC. If it is not the original OS cd that came with your system don't even bother as you will have activate windows within 30 days and may not even allow you to enter the OS once installed until windows is activated.

The green or purple Dell CD's will boot on that system with no problem and it will not even ask you for the keys as it is a Dell OEM Windows OS CD. If you try an official Windows XP OS CD you must have the keys for it.

I need to get into a computer I own, but I forgot the password.

Before the burn of the CD, look for an option that states Bootable CD. You have to make the CD bootable. You might also look on the internet for the term LIVE CD.

Installing Windows XP on new drive in HP a220n

Your new hard drive has a name, like Seagate, Western Digtail, bla, bla... Go to the Mfg's web site for your drive. Download the bootable floppy disk manager setup utilities. If you have a floppy disk drive. If you don't have a floppy drive most Mfg's allow you to make a bootable CD. Lastly or maybe I should have mentioned this first. Make sure your drive is pinned out correctly. I'm only guessing you bought an IDE drive which has a jumper for setting the drive as a master or a slave or a master with a slave.
