My daughter came home from college and we tried to hook her acer laptop (with vista home basic) up to our ethernet connection. My laptop is hooked up to it and also our desktop. Hers wont just be connected to the internet by plugging the ethernet cable in the back of it. It keeps wanting a password and ISP provider. My cable modem doesnt require these things and our other comps (which run on XP) didnt make us type these things in. There is no way to bypass this and I am very very frustrated.

Open up internet explorer>tools>connections and make sure never dial a connection is ticked as it seems as if its trying to dial a connection instead of using the always online connection that the router provides.

Close IE and the open it up again, refresh window if required and it should go online

There's no place on modem to hook router

Look for Ethernet jacks. You want to hook both your computer and your daughter's laptop to the router to out ports i.e. usually on the front side. The back side of router would hook using probably another Ethernet jack to your modem.

CHECK YOUR FIREWALL SETTINGS AND IF YOU USE NORTON OR OTHER ANTIVIRUS YOU NEED TO UNCHECK THE FIREWALL OPTION TO OFF ..... LET MICROSOFT RUN THE FIREWALL . THEN RUN VISTAS FIX FOR INTERNET CONNECTION .

try it after few hours. else use a different ID. are you using a personal internet connection or a shared one from a local server over lan?

are you using wifi connection, I mean wireless connection or you're hooking up to a LAN network or through a modem connection? If all this connection wouldn't worked out anymore, try reinstalling your Operating System!

First and foremost before you try to downgrade your OS from Vista to XP make sure that you can find a working device driver for your laptop, if you check your manufacturer's website(Acer) see if they have XP drivers for your device because I had some clients that are having problem trying to make some of their device work(built in webcam, ethernet, wi-fi, sound) when they downgraded to XP for faster processing.

Check that the wireless drivers are installed properly on both your laptop and desktop. THe certificate error is because your laptop does not "trust" your computer. Under network conections click add a connection ec, and when you try to conect, microsoft should ask you weva to trust the connections from computer to computer that should do it :D

Laptop to printer

1- put the printer in a SHARE folder
2- put her laptop in the share folder
3-( I'm assuming she is in your residence,!!!??? she can not do it if she is in a different location )

there may be a solution if she is away from home there is a device they sell you connect it to your cable and desktop; can also be used for hooking up your DVD, VCR, camera (checking your house from a camera ;security) and playing it while in another place. Ask at a computer store.

Daughter can not get laptop connected to the web from her dorm.

Its possible that the firewall on her computer stops it. The firewall may be thinking that the scan is an attack. Try disabling it.

Try resetting the device to the default factory settings. Then see if you can get an IP address, either wireless or ethernet, to configure the router through its web interface.
