try to reinstall black cartridge ,and clean contact as the follow picture if still the problem try the next step 1. Unplug the power cable from printer while the printer is powered on.
2.
Press and hold Plus (#) and 6 while plugging in the power cord. This
will perform a maintenance cycle. I did this twice but no joy. BUT THE
THIRD TIME WORKED!!!
Print a self test by pressing "Setup" and then 1, then 1 again.
Before doing this, Please make sure that the black ink is in good level then try cleaning the print head of your printer.
to do that:
From computer:
- You need to launch the HP SOLUTION CENTER from your computer, - at the bottom part, please click on settings. - then, select the printer toolbox and select printer services. - now, on the list, look for clean printhead and then follow the instructions.
- it will print a diagnostic page. If the print out is not acceptable please do the second level of cleaning and so on. - And if you do have the acceptable diagnostic page printout, please stop the cleaning process and try to print a document from your computer.
have you found a solution to your black ink problem??? I am experiencing exactly what you describe, no error messages, I have reset the printer, alinged, cleaned etc but still not a single drop of black ink but all the colours are working fine. if you know what was wrong please let me know.

If it is a original HP cartridge try running the inbuild cartridge clean and if that does not work you can get a replacement cartridge from HP if it falls under there warrenty agreements if it is not a genuine hp cartridge I suggest go and get yourself one. Also by using generic cartridges in these systems and mess up the ink systems of the actual unit
See if you can install your printer on another computer and then try printing with it again. Run a test print first to be sure and check your print out. If this fails, Run a print head cleaning using the printer utility setting. If it does not work, Get another Black ink and try it out again. Cheers!
I have changed the BLACK cartridge ( as suggested ) but still cannpt print or move breyond the PROBLEM Note that comes up to CHANGE the Yellow and Black Cartridge - I cannot SCAN or COPY leave alone PRINT - please suggest a solution - Thanks ,
Have you tried to change the print cartridge as black print is usually down to the print cartridge faulty. The other possibility is that the cartridge contacts are dirty or broken.
