Question about Televison & Video

Missing connector Hi, I'm rebuilding an old Sony Trinitron KV-21LT1U. On the motherboard, immediately behind the tuner, there should be a soldered (three-pronged) plug that a black wire connects to (Sorry the description is so poor - I'm a relative beginner.) The plug is missing. Do you know where I can get one? Many Thanks, Bert at

Boards are built with some or many spots left open because the same board is used on different models with different features.

That may be one of those and is unused for your model. The part on the board is the socket and the plug is on the wire bundle or ribbon cable. If you actually have something that should go there, you can skip the plug and socket and solder the wires direct (watch for polarity).

The box on the back of tv that the coax cable turns onto is broken. Can we go buy a cable peice and just solder it back on or do we need to order the whole little box?

You can buy the RF jack and solder it back onto the tuner as long as the tuner has not been damaged beyond repair. Inside the tuner the center conductor from the jack solders into the printed circuit board. If any small parts are broken or missing then you will have to replace the tuner.

How to replace your TV tuner "F" connector.

You were moving your TV but forgot to remove the cable.

Suddenly you get to the end of the coax's length and keep on going. Out comes the "F" connector from the tuner. What do you do now?.

If you were lucky you can install a new "F" connector with some work. If you were not lucky you will have to install a new tuner. If you do not have the skills necessary to install the "F" connector (it is tedious), you may want to opt for a new tuner which should not be that expensive anyway.

If you have good soldering skills and can work on small items you may be able to do this. It requires removing the lower back of the unit, removing the board that the tuner is mounted to.

Depending on the type of TV, Direct view, LCD flatscreen or projector there are various ways the board could be removed.

Usually the tuner is on the small signal board. To remove this board you will need to take out all the screws around the perimeter so the board can be lifted out.

Some units also have plastic fasteners which need to be popped loose. They are pushed up through the board and help to stabilize it. The hold down method should be obvious if you study the board.

Once the board is removed turn it over to the solder side and unsolder the tuner and remove it from the board. Next you will need to pry the sides off the tuner.

Mark them left and right or in some method so you can reinstall them on the proper side. They generally have grounding tabs which need to be located in a particular space.

Once you can see the solder side of the board check it for cracks or damage and if possible remove the old connector wire from the "F" connector.

If the board is damaged you may have to replace the tuner. They are available at and usually are under $50 US.

Order a new one, reinstall it and reassemble the unit and your unit should be ready to operate.

If the board is not damaged you will need a new "F" connector for PC board mounting.

They are available at .

When you get the part you will have to fit it to the unit and solder it into place. This should be obvious. I always solder the connector to the tuner case the entire circumference of the connector and have never had any repeat repairs. To do the soldering on that you will need a 120/140 watt soldering gun. They are available at .

If the board has no hidden cracks it should work when reassembled. Reassemble the tuner, install in the board, reassemble the TV and you should be operational.

Picture Flickering

The sony tuners have been known to get intermittent, it might be a bad ground where the tuner connects to the main chasis, If the problem is in the tuner itself it will be most difficult to resolve since the connections are so small and compacted together.
Good luck

whats wrong with the old tuner? did the connector break? depending on the damage the connector can be replaced to replace the tuner right out i would call a medium difficult level. it invovles removeing the signal board the board with the tuner on it simply unsoldering and replacings care should be taken not damage surface mounted components. at the shop it is possible we repair these tuner which involves opening the can tuner and soldering a new connector to the can of the tuner.

Help me

If you are decent with soldering iron you can repair it yourself. Remove the back, and remove the signal board from the unit. Unsolder the Tuner from the board( If I've lost you already, call a TV shop for repair) Remove the shields on the tuner and inspect for damage to the tuner itself. If the board is in good shape, replace the RF connector with RCA # 215543. you'l have to unsolder the old ends connector ( the wire thats still there broken ) from the board, then attach the new end, and solder to the board. Then using high heat, solder the Connector to the tuner housing. Replace tuner on board, hook everything back up, and you should be in business.

Tv repair

No instrution sheet that I know of. Those "F" connectors are most of the time part of the "tuner", if so just take off the tuner (unsolder it) and pop off the two sides of the "tuner can" and straighten the "can". Take the "F" connector with a small screw driver and scrape the side of the connector to make it shinny and so the solder will stick to it, and do the same to the "tuner can". Use a good hot iron to solder it back on. Do NOT get the "F" connector so hot that the inside of the connector will melt. The center conductor of the "F" connector will have to be soldered back into its hole as well.
