HP OfficeJet K80 All-In-One Problem: Constant Request To Realign Cartridge

On May 22, 2008 you posted a solution (below) on FixYa.com to the constant request from a HP OfficeJet K80 for alignment of cartridges. These alignments fail. Faxing out works, but not copying or printing. Do I need to purchase a replacement color cartridge (I don't really print in color)? How do I fix or replace the bad spot sensor that you refer to? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

- Kent

Here's the deal with the cartridge alignment page....the machine will spit out a series of black lines mixed with yellow ink and at the beginning of each of these lines is a "Green" check mark. The carriage moves back and forth over these lines and green check marks and reads them by use of what is called a "spot sensor" that resides on the right side of the carriage assembly. This is usually noticed by the blue ray of light that shines out of it. So if you are getting an alignment failure one of two things is happening....1)You've have got a bad cartridge (usually the color) and it is not laying down the right colors, specifically the green check mark or 2)You've got a bad spot sensor...even though it may still be shining the blue light, the sensor board can't process the information. Its an easy fix either way.

I change the black cartridge & hit enter to align cartirdges & it prints out a page & then says alignment failed. I try taking out the cartridge & even taking out the color one, & it still stays alignment failed.

    Please help!

    Thank you!

This could be a hit or miss but what does it hurt to try...
I had this problem with the color cartridge a while back. Worked tirelessly with HP support and somehow got it to work. Since it was on the phone and a while back, I fogot! Now is the time for the black cartridge. Same thing. Reading somewhere here about skipping the test I gave it a try and it worked.

- Unplug the printer for 1 minute (not sure if this is necessary but it doesn't hurt).
- Replug.
- When the "Press Enter to align..." message comes up, PRESS and HOLD Enter.
- While holding Enter, press Menu. The screen skips the test part and shows the date.
- Release Enter. Now you can print. Actually, I could print, you are on your own now.

Good luck!

K80 All in One Printer continual asks for new blck or clr cart

I have a number of hp printers. All are all in ones. It has been my experience that sometimes any of them can give you a false mess on the screen. For my printers the ink used are #23, #15, #78, #45. Any of them either new, compatible, or refilled can be misread. My only suggestion is to ignore the mess, and either make 1 copy manually, or from the tower to see if the misread really is a misread or if the cartridge really is either damaged in some way or is the wrong one. Or you can run the alignment page. In either case the result will be either acceptable or not. Also there are many other hp printers that use the same #s, the 900 seires in fact. The 600 and 700 series use a combination of the #23 and #15, The v40 series also use the #78 and #15. These can be found in second hand stores or the national chain GOODWILL INDUSTRIES, similar but not related to SALVATION ARMY. I hope this helps.

I cleaned the vertical centerpost (you'll see it when the cartidge is out)with a small amount of acetone (nail polish remover) on a Qtip & it works fine now....must be some kind of circuit that needs to be closed and the ink on it kept it open....
