Vista has identified your printer. It loads up its default printer driver (stored in vista OS) in your new computer. This usually have the basic features only. You need to run again the CD to install or enable the added features of your said printer. If you have lost the CD you can do an alternate option by downloading the software on this link. ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/united-states/pse/hppse1.12.0.46enu.exe
For the the CD that was crumbled inside your cd-rom. You can try to pull out the CD from the Tower casing and try yo maually open the CD rom unit itself. Or may i suggest that you can buy a new one. (CD/DVD roms are cheaper now a days)
The causes of CD crashing inside your CD rom;
1. wrong placement of CD/DVD disc 2. Hardware failure of the CD/DVD roms
If you connect and turn on the printer then turn on your computer it should start the found new hardware wizard. don't do anything until or IF it asks you to install the disc, the make sure you direct it to find the files under the correct drive letter which is usually "D" or "E" .Good luck, .Dana
Unplug printer USB from computer. Chose OS version and download the driver. After downloading run installer file, this will start printer setup wizard. Connect printer back when required from setup wizard.
hi w. finn, there is a possibility that the CD or the ROM you have is not working completely or CD is damaged, not to worry because the software you need is downloadable from epson for free, just click on the link below and select your operating system if it is XP, Vista or Mac OS X
Unfortunately, win98 always requires the cd rom as there are certain files on the disc that it uses to install the software and hardware, so you will have to find a copy from Ebay or somewhere or purchase an xp disc and upgrade.
