There are a number of different reasons why your computer may no longer give sound. If you have this problem, read on to learn how to diagnose the problem and resolve your PC's loss of sound.
Instructions Things You'll Need

  • Driver and Application Recovery CDs
  • Updated sound driver software

Check the Speaker Connections and Volume Control Settings
    • Verify that the lack of sound is not due to faulty speaker connections. A simple way to test it is to substitute the speaker connection with headphones and see if you get any sound.
    • Open the volume control window by clicking your "Start" button and then "All Programs." Click "Accessories," then "Entertainment," then "Volume Control." Alternatively, just click on the speaker icon that's in your System Tray.
    • Check the volume and mute settings. If any of the mute check boxes have been checked, uncheck them. If this doesn't work, read on.
Perform a System Restore If Necessary
    • If the sound has been audible from your computer's speakers and is suddenly lost, you may need to perform a System Restore. Click on the " Start" button and then "All Programs."
    • Click on "Accessories," then "System Tools," then "System Restore."
    • Complete the System Restore Wizard. If this doesn't work, read on.
Delete and Reinstall the Original Sound Drivers
    • Deleting and reinstalling your sound driver may resolve the problem. Your sound driver may have been corrupted or may be missing. The result of this is that the restore utility menu won't be available. For Windows XP, follow these steps.
    • Click on your "Start" button. Click on "Control Panel" and then "System." Next, click on "Hardware," then "Device Manager, then "Sound, Video and Game Controllers."
    • Click on a sound device named in the Device Manager, and then press the Delete key on the keyboard. Click "OK" in the window that appears. Remove all the listed sound devices i this way EXCEPT Audio Codec and Legacy Audio Drivers.
    • Restart your computer. Reinstall the deleted drivers using the Driver and Application Recovery CDs that came with your Windows XP system.
    • Visit your computer manufacturer's official website. Check for any updated sound driver software for your sound card. If any, download them along with the installation instructions.

My M-audio FireWire 410 doesn't work

It sounds like you may be experiencing a configuration issue with your M-Audio FireWire 410 audio interface. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
  1. Check the connections: Make sure that the FireWire 410 is securely connected to your computer and that all cables are properly plugged in. If the connections are loose or faulty, it can cause problems with the audio output.
  2. Restart the device: Sometimes, restarting the audio interface can resolve issues with the audio output. To do this, disconnect the FireWire 410 from your computer, wait a few seconds, and then reconnect it.
  3. Update the drivers: It is possible that the drivers for your FireWire 410 may be out of date or incompatible with your operating system. To update the drivers, visit the M-Audio website and download the latest drivers for your device. Once the drivers are installed, restart your computer and try using the FireWire 410 again.
  4. Check the settings: Make sure that the FireWire 410 is selected as the default audio device in your operating system's audio settings. You can access these settings by going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound. Under the Playback and Recording tabs, select the FireWire 410 and click the Set Default button.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, it is best to contact M-Audio support for further assistance. They should be able to provide you with specific guidance for troubleshooting the problem with your FireWire 410.

My computer doesn't detect my speakers, I do have windows 8

Do you have the AC adapter plugged into a live outlet and have you turned on the speakers? Make sure that the speaker signal cable is plugged into the correct port on your computer (the lime green port on a desktop). Check that the correct audio driver is installed for your computer. (With Windows 8, use the Device Manager to check. From the Start Screen, type in Device Manager. Click on Settings and then select Device Manager. Alternatively, Windows key+C on the desktop. Select Settings and then Control Panel. You can find the Device Manager under System and Security or Hardware and Sound.) Scroll down to the Audio devices. Expand the section and look for a red triangle with an X or a yellow triangle with an exclamation point. Try updating the driver (check with the manufacturer of your computer for the latest driver). Even if you don't see the error triangle, try reinstalling the latest driver.

Next check if the speakers work on another computer. If they don't work, the audio cable may be damaged. Try a different set of computer speakers on your computer.
If other known good speakers do not work and the correct audio drivers have been installed, check the audio output devices. Go to the Control Panel > Hardware and Sound page (as described above). Choose Manage Audio Devices. Check if the HDMI port is set as the default audio device. Disable it for a bit (right click on the device) . Sometimes when a new video card is installed, the audio device defaults to this port. This messes up the drivers for the regular audio.) Reboot the computer and then try reinstalling the audio driver. Reboot again.
If it still fails, there is probably something wrong with the audio device hardware. If you are using an add-on sound card, try disabling it and using the motherboard audio device. (A number of add-on sound cards didn't work well with Win7 or Win8. The on-board audio drivers worked better.) If you are using the motherboard audio on a desktop, try an add-on sound card. (Check for Windows 8 compatibility (drivers) before selecting any card.)

I hope this helps.

Help!

Hi foxy,

If the speakers do not work, check first that audio is not muted, you find audio settings on Control Panel>>Sound and Audio Devices if there is no audio device , that will need that you have to reinstall the drivers.

If your computer is a brand one (eg Dell optiplex 1080, or IBM Activa etc.) then place a request for drivers on the free forum, giving exact model of your computer.

If the computer is no famous brand, or assembled, you will have to note down all the numbers printed on the boards inside the computer.

That is quite complicate, for a regular user it is often faster to buy a new audio card, that start from $10.

A good solution can be buying an external USB audio adapter , that costs $12 : SIIG SoundWave 7.1 Audio Adapter
