Question about JVC Car Audio & Video

Hi , I just brought a KD-G646 head unit and it wont play cd's at all. The radio works fine, but the usb only works if the unit is turned down. Could i have something wired wrong or is the unit faulty. It wont load cd's at all and makes a funny clicking noise when its trying to read cd's.

Checked the voltage difference between the earth wire and the car battery and found that when the head unit was turned up , a voltage difference of up to 3 volts before the unit would cut out. Onec the unit cuts out the voltage drop was gone, until it rebots and trys to make sound again. It seemed to happen at volume settings of around 17-25. So all i needed to do to fix it was run a heavyer earth wire. The units obviously have a low voltage cut out, although it only cuts out for about .5 of a second or less.

Well, the USB problem i cant help you with, but if the cd isnt loading, theres probably something wrong with the loading mechanism, which usually means that the unit is faulty. it would be more cost efficient to buy a new head unit than to pay someone for the parts and labor to repair the one you have.

If the Head Unit was submerged in water it's doubtful that it will ever work again.

Hi colinelva.
I can probably help you but I need more info.
Lets start with the vehicle, What year ,? What specific model?, What type of head unit came out? Was it factory?
Did you use a wiring adapter, or just cut the plug off and hardwire it?. If so give me the color code of all the wires that you used in the dash. are their any left over but not hooked up? How many speakers? All Factory?

I don't need any info about the JVC Head unit.
Lets start with that, and we will take it from there.

Everytime i turn my car off and take the key out of the ignition all my stereo presets reset. all connections made are correct, however there is one wire which is left over. it is orange with white stripes...

Most stereos have two power connections. One is "constant" (aka always connected to +12V) and the other is switched on/off by the ignition. They may go be various names. The idea is that the constant +12V keeps the stereo from losing all of the settings while the switched power turns the stereo off when the key is not on "start" or "accessory". It sounds like the both connections may be made to the switched power on your car, causing it to go completely powerless when your car is off.

Are the presets reset after you turn the car off or only after you turn your car back on? If they only reset after turning the car back on, it's possible the battery and/or electrical system is having trouble keeping the system voltage up while the starter is trying to turn the engine.

The illumination signal is usually used to let the stereo know when you've turned your headlights on, so it can dim the display automatically. Should be completely separate from your issue.
