D-Link DNS-120 USB Controller

Access denied when wrtint to D-Link DNS-120...

By Janice - usenet poster

I purchased a D-Link DNS-120 device that allows attaching usb drives to the
DNS-120 and using them as networked drives. It works fine reading/writing
with USB flash drives formatted in FAT or FAT32. It works reading/writing
when I format my Wester Digital 250GB WD-2500JB in multiple small FAT32
logical drives. I NTFS formatted and placed files on the WD drive when it was
attached to my Windows XP Home Edition Computer's USB port. However, when I
placed the drive on the network, I could read-only and not write. When I
tried writing, I received "Access Denied". I've been trying to get a reply
from DLink all week, but they either don't know what is wrong or have
concluded it's my problem not theirs. Please help!!!

I had the same problem.  After an hour on the phone with Dlink tech
support, I was told that the DNS-120 does not support writing to NTFS.
The tech rep told me to reformat my 300gig drive with FAT32.  I hope
this is something that can be fixed with a firmware patch.  I have
sent an email to Dlink expressing my dismay.

If the drive is NTFS you can only read from it. Format the drive into small FAT32 ( I think under 30gb) partitions and it should work. Dlink doesn't plan on fixing this.

Right now, the Linux is hard to sopport NTFS write access. It is
dangerous.
You can visit http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge. net/status.html for
detail.
The most NAS in the world used Linux OS.

And, if you want to use the big partition ( >32giga) for your usb
harddrive.
Maybe you can consider to use Acronis PartitionExpert 2003 , Paragon
Partition Manager 2000 , PartitionMagic   ,The Partition Resizer or
Syncronys BigDisk to format a harddrive with FAT32.

In my point of view, FAT32 can be used by Any Windows/OS, but NTFS
can't.

Hope it is useful for you.

Try calling Tavarus at 800-326-1688 ext 6173 and see if he can help you. He
was supposed to call me back in one hour last Wednesday (11-10-2004). I
haven't heard from him yet. I'm about ready to send the thing back, if it
won't work as advertised and they don't know how to fix it.

I am having the exact same problem. I called D-Link and they kept
insisting that they read the manual to me over the phone. The guy on
the phone simply did not know anything about this product and did not
even know what it was for. They were no help.

I have an 80GB Usb 2.0 drive formatted NTFS and when it is attached to
the DNS-120 I can read from it, but cannot write to it. If you find a
solution, please let me know.
