Kenmore 110 Series 90 stops at the rinse cycle full of water

My Kenmore model 110-2092290 stops at the rinse cycle full of water. I sometimes can get it to drain the water and spin if i play with the knob enough. Sometimes very rare i can get it to start back up by lifting the lid and putting it back down. what can this be. Thanks in advance

I forgot to mention it does agitate

  • nwatkins Aug 20, 2008

You are right. I put it in the mode where it stops and put my finger in the safety switch and it works, I noticed when you put the lid down it doesn't go down enough to click, I tried tightening the screws but it didn't help. It seems that from putting my hand underneath the opposite side of the metal cover it needs to touch is a little lose. So if i put the lid down and with just a little pressure up by the safety switch it will start to work, do you think that will damage it more? until i can figure out how to fix it. I read the instructions but i am not sure if i can do that and if i do i am worried that I may mess something up. (It doesn't help that i am blond lol..) THANKS SO MUCH!

The washer does not spin or agitate. It makes a strange noise. The water does drain.

The symptoms you describe are often caused by a lid switch malfunction. It may be loose or not making good contact. hence, the reason why you can get it to work sometimes by lifting and closing the lid. As you open and close the lid, you should hear a "clicking" sound as the lid switch is activated. If you do not hear the switch, check to make sure the lid strike in still intact. This is a small plastic piece mounted on the lid that pushes down on the switch through a slot on the wash tub opening on the right hand side. If this piece breaks off, it will give the same symptoms of a broken lid switch. Next, check the two mounting screws on the right side of the wash tub opening to make sure they are tight. These are the mounting screws for the lid switch. Sometimes they come loose and the switch does not make proper contact. If you attempt all these preliminaries, and the switch still does not seem to be working properly, replace it. A replacement can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and the part will be located under the "Top and Cabinet" heading. For instructions on how to replace a lid switch, click on the following link:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

This is a simple and inexpensive repair if you wish to accomplish this on your own. A replacement switch usually cost between $25 and $35. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you require further assistance.

NOTE: For future reference, it is strongly recommended that you do not slam the washer lid or place heavy objects on the lid. This can cause damage to the lid switch.

This is actually a very simple repair if you follow the step-by-step instructions. You may surprise yourself at what you can accomplish if you put your mind to it. This could mean the difference between a $25-$35 repair and a $100-$150 repair. Labor charges kill. I can understand your hesitation if you've never worked on a washer before, though. I try to encourage, but also don't want to push someone towards a job they don't feel comfortable with. I hope you get your washer fixed. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Can you provide the exact Make, Model and Kenmore model number? ..........

Kenmore model numbers use the format ###.######## with the first three digits of 110 for Whirlpool manufactured machines.........

The model number on top load washers is usually found by lifting the lid and looking above the tub.

The Fixya numbers are Stock Numbers. Series numbers (70, 80, 90) only designate the number of "Bells and Whistles" that a washer has and don't reflect the model number.

See the following for where to find the model number:

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=21&osCsid=c73289e58485c8752675ae1a35ff796b

Since basic top load direct drive, top load electronic and front load washers are very different, the actual Model Numbers are necessary to correctly diagnose the problem.

You have a bad water level selecter switch (Load size) you will need to replace. It's not hard, located inside the console and does not cost much.

Kenmore washing machine model 110 wash cycle stops

DOES IT DO THIS ON EVERY WASH OR SOMETIMES? IF SOMETIMES, CHECK LID SWITCH( THERE'S A LITTLE HOLE WHEN YOU OPEN THE LID, ON THE LID SHOULD HAVE A LITTLE PLASTIC PIECE THAT GOES IN THAT HOLE. THE SWITCH IS UNDER, INSIDE THAT HOLE. YOU CAN GET A PEN OR KEY TO SEE IF IT'S BROKEN.)

Kenmore 80's series top loader only works on wash and rinse cycle

This is a problem with the pump being stuck so the motor cant turn the whole thing. Turn the washer on its side, underneath you can acces the pump, which is connected to the motor by two long clips. remove the pump and take out the colg that caused it to get stuck.
