Question about IBM ThinkPad T30 2366 Notebook
This could be a number of different problems that causes the irregular shut down. It could be the power supply, battery, memory, processor, fan, heat sink, or motherboard. Try these in this order. Check the power supply with an ohm meter for the proper output. Remove the battery and run on power supply only. Remove the memory, and try running with one chip then the other. If the machine seems hot when shutting down, clean the fan and heat sink, also remove the processor, blow it off with air and seat it back in properly. Check all connections on the motherboard. If at this point the problem sill persists, then it's a significant problem with the motherboard or a motherboard component, and you should take it in for a professional diagnosis.
