Question about Linksys (WRT54GC) Router

2 Answers

I set up WRT54GC wireless router, by connecting via cable, and running the CD that came with it. I then went onto the net and set up the security settings. I then removed the connecting cable and the thing simply won;t work. I cannot even locate it. Have searched for help on the net on this for hours at this point but have had no luck. Can anyone tell me in simple language what I need to do!

Who is your internet Service provider? if it is cable then go to the same page and do a MAC address clone. Enable it first and click on Clone. Make sure tosave your settings below.
Make sure you have an ip address on the Status tab to the far right before removing the cable ethernet wire you used.
If it is DSL change your local ip address to
and perform a powercycle.

means switching everything (modem, router, and PC )off for 30 seconds.

Firmware reflash:

if the router's SSID is not broadcasted even though it is on "SSID Broadcast enabled" under the wireless settings, you may need to reflash the router's firmware if a HARD RESET did not work.

Hard reset:

this is pressing the reset button on the router for 25 seconds, unplug and replug the power cord while reset is still pushed, then let go of the reset button once the power is plugged back in.

Firmware upgrade:

Click here to get the steps needed to be done.

if this still did not work, you may want to contact Linksys tech support at 1-800-546-5797 for further troubleshooting or an RMA depending on the status of the device.

Loss the setup CD-ROM

A setup CD isn't needed to setup the linksys wireless router.
To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

If you connect the router (WRT54GC) to your broadband modem does it then allow wireless action? Your router has an Internet address. It is, in all probability. Check your manual to be sure. Access to the control panel is through this address. You must log in to the router then set up the Wireless, the SSID (the name you give your network) and any security you set up. I prefer the WEP-PSK[TKIP] as it's easiest. Other things with the router, settings and such, pretty much are set automatically, so once security is set you should be good to go. Good luck !!!

You need to reconfigure the router. The power outage probably resetted the router to it's default settings. In the default state the router doesn't have any wireless security; hence the "unsecured network" warning from your PC.

Connect your PC or a laptop with a cable to the router, surf to ( or - ignoring any security warning); which is the configuration interface of the router and follow instructions in the manual.

When you have a Linksys configuration CD, you can simply run the "Easy configuration" setup after connecting your PC with a cable to the router.

Plainly put you just have to configure the router just like when you first used it.
