This is probably the ignition lock cylinder worn out or getting old. The TDM is most likely not locking the key in, but new cars are pretty tied into themselves. For now, just try leaving the key in. Use another one for the doors. Some cars have a small hole under the steering wheel/column that you can stick a pen or something in to release your key. Maybe just be ready for something else breaks, then you'll know what is wrong.

Thank you. I did some checking on the internet and thought maybe the ignition control module sounded more like the problem I was experiencing, so I called the dealer back to ask. Apparently the diagnostic codes are suggesting it's the VATS module. We'll see, I suppose... I just hope the dealer is right, funds are tight to fix anything right now and the longer I have this car, the more frequent and more expensive the problems are becoming. I didn't think about a manual release though, so that's a new option. I'm really hesitant to leave the key in the car, would it still work with my remote starter?
Is the remote starter an AFTERMARKET? Or did it come on the car? What year make and model is your car?
Yes, it's an aftermarket addition. I have a 2001 Grand Prix GT (bright red) :-)
Well, thats good to know. When installing an aftermart remote start on a VATS system, you must do a bypass of the key and ignition. This renders the chip in the key useless. My guess is that the only part of the system left is that TDM (theft deterrent module). Which is pretty expensive. So he might be right that its locking the key in. I know you can bpass that TDM, but i just dont know if it will release the key. Bypass solutions in that link above. Good luck
Thanks so much for your suggestions and that link. Yeah, this is going to be a $500 fix :-( I was not aware of how after-market remote changed the situation.
