Question about Sewing Machines
I have a brother XL-3100 and when I try to sew the bobbin thread will not pick up. No thread at all is in the clothing ive just sewn. I have oiled it , rewound bobbin and changed needles. This is the first time i have used this machine (or any in last 15years) so i need help to know what im doing wrong or just haw to fix it.. Thank YOU HW
PS THE FRONT OF MACHINE SAYS ITS A BROTHER XL-3100, but this sight says this is not a valid product so i had to pick a difrent one to beable to submitte my question, again thank you.. I can't make my bobbin thread work on a Brother model XL-3100 seral# U13103
A flat triangle slightly curved metal plate is seperated from bobbin support, is this correct or is it broken? If it is broken what is the replacement part number and cost? I am in need of a operators & technical service manual for this unit including a Singer Stylist 834 serial #91278495. I would appreciate this information buy the way my Dad is a retired BioMedical Engineer. I know he could us this information when I ask him to fix it,
It sounds like your machine has a broken vertical shaft gear.
Open the slide plate and, while turning the handwheel, look to see if the hook is turning under the bobbin case. If not, take it to a repair person and it should cost around $100 to replace the gear.

SOURCE: do you prefer the singer
Here's a review for the 834.
Although it mentions you cannot raise and lower the feed dogs, you can change the throat plate to cover the feed dogs when you don't want to use them.
I couldn't find any reviews for the 518. I think the higher the number, the newer the machine although I may be wrong about that! I have a Singer Stylist 416.
I would look at how easy and expensive it is to get replacement parts for both machines before making your choice.
This is a good site for Singer Stylist parts. http://www.tandtrepair.com/index.html
Why don't you email the guy who runs it and ask him what his preference would be?
Hope this helps, Hazel
