I would like to erase my hard drive and make my laptop new again how can I do that

Most laptops come with a "recovery" disc or feature which allows you to restore the laptop to its original factory condition. This will often include erasing everything on the hard drive (HDD) and reinstalling the original operating system and included software. In most cases anything you've saved to the HDD will be lost unless you make a backup first.

Another option is to use a Windows installation disc. When the disc is inserted (or if you boot from the disc) you will have the option of reinstalling Windows. You will be warned that all data on the HDD will be lost in the process. If you choose to continue Windows will reformat the HDD and perform a clean installation.

Choosing the option to reinstall Windows from a Windows disc may require an active internet connection or you may need to provide drivers in order for certain laptop hardware to perform correctly or be recognized by Windows. It is also important to choose a version of Windows which your laptop is capable of running.

WHAT IS .NTLDR .WIN XP HOME

NTLDR is the file that loads the OS. (It expands to NT Loader - all versions of Windows from WIN NT (Win2K) through XP used this file.) The message could indicate the ntdetect.com is damaged.

First make sure that you do not have a non-boot disc in the floppy or CD drive. Similarly, if your computer can boot from a USB device, unplug flash drives or other USB drives. Make sure that your boot device order is accurate (your C: drive should be first) in the BIOS. (Accessing the BIOS depends on your computer, often you need to repeatedly press F1, Esc, Del, or F10 after turning on the computer. There should be a screen that shows you the correct key.) While you are in the BIOS, make sure that your hard drive is recognized by the machine. If your hard drive isn't recognized, try replacing the data cable with a new cable and switching power connection cable with another from the power supply.

If the hard drive is present, the first solution is to get a bootable CD and copy the files back to your C: drive. You can use a Windows XP install or upgrade disk. For this type of source. Boot to the CD (press any key) and then enter the Repair option (R). Choose your Windows installation and enter your administrator password. Then copy i386ntldr and i386ntdetect.com from the CD (D: or E: drive) to the C: drive. (for example: type "copy d:i386ntldr c:" without the quotes )

The boot information (MBR) could be damaged. In that case, the you'll need the Windows CD to run fixboot and fixmbr from the Recovery Console.

If the above doesn't work, you should try a new hard drive and copy the files to it. Make sure that you format the drive to create a bootable disc. (Use a bootable diskette, if needed.)

I hope this helps.

My pavilion dv7 is saying "boot device not found". It is saying there is "no hard disk". Any suggestions appreciated.

I would want you to tell me if your Laptop feels hotter than usual.

If so... this in combination with the Boot device not found message means you may have two problems.

1: The hard disc is failing

2: Your cooling fan isn't working

Either one could cause the other to fail. If the hard drive is overheating the cooling fan may not be able to keep it cool enough to function properly,

If the cooling fan isn't working properly or the cooling vents are clogged the hard drive and/or the intergrated circuitry could be overheating

If you do not sense any over heating.

You hard drive may have crashed, if you have another one you can put in the laptop to see if it is recognized.

Would help to have some sort of disc you can boot off of that would recognize a hard drive such as a Linux live CD or Hiren's boot CD or some sort of PE disc. Maybe a Windows install disc. to try and find out the cause.

Good Luck

Ghost disc will not boot, not recognized as valid windows copy

If it's a Norton disk, call Norton, it should be bootable. If it's a disk you burned, it may not be a bootable system disk. Make sure your computer is set to boot from CD/DVD drive in the bios (setup) Press F2(usually, sometimes it's delete) while booting, go into setup, and make sure under boot devices/sequence that your disk drive is first in the boot sequence. Try the disk on another machine to see if it's the disk, or the machine. If it's the disk, Call Norton (if it's theirs) or have someone make another one for you.

I am trying to copy a ps3 game to my computer, but the dvd drive in my computer wont read the disc.Any ideas

The playstation 3 game format is in Blu-ray... but also a special format of Blu-ray to keep people from making illegal copies of the disc. Also the disc is formatted in a way that a PC will not recognize the disc unless the drive has been modified illegally. A standard DVD drive will not recognize a Blu-Ray disc.

Cannot get drive to recognize in my computer- red light followed by flashing blue light

Is this a new hard drive, if so did you initialize it with the included software? new drives need to initialized when first powered up. Install the laptop and boot the computer using the included software, the disc will initialize and then you can reboot using your windows or restore disc to finish.

Cannot install win 2k or win xp xp on biostar m7ncg 400 v7.2 mobo

Hi dewasu1803,
seems like a hard drive issue. (Unless you received an error message from the system during setup of 2k or XP)? (Also hope its a certified Window CD & not a copy).
Here are two ways to get around this. The fastest is to use a software program to clean the hard disk drive. Best software I have come across it Boot & Nuke. Download from this site; http://www.dban.org/download (Darik's Boot and Nuke 1.0.7 ).

On the other hand, its suggested you go to the hard disk drives manufactures web site & download their utility software which will allow you to create a bootable floppy disk too. Boot the system to the floppy. If there is an issue with the drive the floppy software will repair it. If there is a problem with either the MBR or FAT it will also fix it. You'll also be able to setup the type of file system, NTFS or FAT32, ECT. If you include the manufacture & model number of the 120GB drive I'll include the web site for downloading.

For Seagate & Maxtor go here; http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/

Western Digital start here: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?lang=en

If you did receive an error message while attempting to install, post the message here!

Good luck dewasu1803!

Cannor Read DVDs

I have a similar issue to you, except that my dvd drive will only recognize a disc if I have booted up into windows with it in the tray...once in windows it will still think it has the first disc in no matter what disc i insert. If i boot up with no disc then it will never read it unless I follow the steps below.

A solution I found by pure frustration and trying all sorts of things is to eject the DVD tray and leave it opened, then right click on the dvd drive in 'my computer' and select the 'hardware' tab...then select the drive and click 'properties'.
A new window should open. Select 'volumes' and click 'populate'. Now close the window and insert the disc you wish to read, close the tray and repeat this process. Windows should now recognize the disc you inserted

Alot of trouble I know, but it works for me. Hope this helps.
