all of the other functions have rings that work.  voice mail and text messages however, do not ring when received.  if on vibrate, it will work though.

Ok, after trying a few different things, i think i figured out why this happened. i switched back to the default profile and i got it to Ring when a text and/or voice mail came in.  i think it had something to do with a ringtone being assigned to the messages at one point and that ringtone either becoming corrupt or missing entirely. i recommend completely revamping the current Profile, starting a new one from scratch, or simply changing back to the default to see if that is the problem.

How do I get rid of unwanted message alert sounds

Go to the sounds icon in the upper left corner of your main Home screen (the one that looks like a speaker with sound coming out of it). Scroll down the list that appears and select Set Ring Tones/Alerts. Click Messages, then select the type of message you want to modify alerts for and make your changes. (Don't forget to save them.)

If you want to remove alert sounds for more than one type of message, just hit the Cancel button, save your changes, and choose the other type(s) of message you want to modify.

I don`t know how to record a sound to my ringtone library, and use it for a ringtone.

After you record a sound and save it go to message then picture message and attach it to the message. then send the message to your own number for Example if your number was 855-555-9999 you would send it to that number

After you get the message go to options and save sound as ring tone.

No alert when sending text message.

Start | Settings | Sound & Notifications (make sure Events is checked). Check out the Notifications tab, too for more control.
