The above link no longer works.
But this one does (for now): http://blog.mtbguru.com/2008/11/06/surgery-on-the-garmin-edge-305/

I made this surgery and it now works great.

This is a problem with the internal connector. If it under warranty send it back. If not http://auberger.com/archives/2008/06/garmin-edge-305-woes has links to pages that show you how to fix it.

My 305 is 3 years old. Recently, after the device is fully charged, it works approximatlly 1 hour and then turns off. on the bike it turns of with every bump on the road. when running, trying to use one of...

Seems you cumulate several issues. If device works only one hour when charged at maximum, without bumps, then your battery is dead, because too long time discharged. You should change it.

The Bumps issue is another one, generally due to bad contacts inside device. Only way to solve is to open device, then arrange for golden contacts inside to be in closer contact or short circuit these by soldering small wires.

Garmin edge 305 screen not on. went over some very rough roads and lost the screen. can hear beeps when i push some buttons but no screen. tried the soft and hard resets described by some w/o success.

Probably a bad contact inside then.

Be careful however to update the device and hard reset it once again before trying opening it.

If device under warranty please send back to Garmin, if you open oit warranty will end automatically.

If none of this is possible then try trick posted at following site :

Electric igniter does not stop sparking after the burner turns on. how do we troubleshoot?

On my DSC RGT-305 range it wasn't either the spark module or the wiring, it was one of the little rotary switches that sit behind the burner control knobs. It shorted out (verified with an ohm meter). The switch is made by State Tool & Mfg. Co. and the part number is 25300. Wayne

Cadence does not register on edge 705

This is probably a pairing problem. Device and cadence should be paired. Pairing is often lost when changing battery.

Pairing the Edge 305 and sensors
Once you have installed the Garmin Edge 305 and the cadence sensor they need to be paired. As they communicate wirelessly with each other the Edge needs to connect to each sensor before it can receive input from it.

The initial pairing needs to be done away from other wireless systems this allows the Edge to pick up the sensors it is supposed to be monitoring. This is a little like black magic, but it seems to work quite easily.

The cadence sensor has a small press contact which puts the sensor into pairing mode. The HRM just seemed to connect by itself.

Subsequent pairing is much faster as the Edge 305 seems to remember which sensors it is paired with. If you have problems or need to change one of the sensors then you can use a setup feature to either turn the sensor off or to re-pair it.

Uploading info from the Edge 305

Apperently my unit had some old data prior to my purchase, (amzon selling returned equipment I imagine)

Anyway, I did a hard reset, (turn the power on while holding the mode button down) Erases all history. I then paired up my accessories again, tested it in 1 second mode and smart recording mode. The hard reset seemed to work for me. My 305 edge is now downloading map and graph data to my PC. Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

Edge 305 shuts off during a short 1 hour ride

I have the same problem. When I contacted Garmin they quickly diagnosed that my battery disconnects as a result of vibrations (like the ones you feel on your handlebars). Since I purchased this device over a year ago, their solution was for me to send it to them and pay $100 to get it fixed. Now one of the guys I ride with is having the same problem. I am very disatisfied with the Garmin 305's reliability. I'm not giving Garmin any more cash. (I paid $350 for this GPS 18 months ago!)

Does anyone know how to open the 305 so I can resecure the battery?

I moved the battery wires to the main board, bypassing the spring contacts. No doubt my warranty is voided but at least the thing works now.
