You need to loosen the bolts that attach the alternator to the engine. Just loosen then a turn or so, don't remove them. Then there should be a long 10 or 12mm bolt attached to a bracket being held by one of those bolts attaching the alternator. One direction loosens while the other tightens the belt. When it is where you want it, retighten the alternator bolts and test.

How do i tighten the timing belt on my 1989 pontiac

I assume you are replacing the belt and also the waterpump, the waterpump is what tightens the timing belt, it spins in the housing in an oval shaped housing and tightens or loosens the belt, you need to loosen the waterpump bolts and rotate the pump to tighten the timing belt, make sure theres a small amount of slack in the belt after you tighten it, you dont what the belt too tight, you should be able to grab belt and move in and out an inch. heres a diagram to make sure all timing marks are lined up. note if the timing belt is being replaced you really should install a new waterpump and check the timing pulleys. good day.

How do i tighten belts on 1997 honda accord?

to tighten the thin belt, loosen the top and then the bottom nuts that go through to the frame. The turn the bolt on top, the closest to the front of the car, clockwise. Then tighten both through bolts up. For the thick belt, loosen the through bolt on the alternator, then turn the long bolt at the bottom, front of car, of alternator clockwise.

How do I replace an alternator on a 2000 VW Passat 1.8T. How hard is it to replace?

it isnt that hard actually

disconect positive battery terminal. and feel the tension on the laternator belt. you will need to bring it back to this tension.

1.) loosen bolts holding alternator in place (LOOK AT THE BELT TO REMEMBER HOW IT GOES, BEST NOT REMOVE THE BELT.)

2.) loosen bolts holding wires to alternator and connect wires to new alternator

3.) Place alternator in engine, replace bolts but dont tighten

4.) put belt in place, it will be slack, use your tire iron or a piece of pipe or wood to pry the alternator back, to bring tension on the belt. You pry the alternator to pull the belt as TIGHT AS POSSIBLE. while holding strain, on it, tighten the bolts.

I can't seem toget my belt around the alternator, aircondition, waterpump

You should have a tensioner pulley somewhere in the belt's path. It will be mounted to the engine but not connected to anything. You need to loosen it and swing it in towards the engine to install the belt. Once the belt is in place, pull the tensioner to the outside and tighten it, but leave some flex in the belt. If the pulley wobbles or whines, you'll need to replace it, too, or it will destroy the new belt.

NOTE: If the belt still won't go on with the tensioner released, the parts guy may have sold you the wrong belt.

Belt noise

You should see a slider bracket on the P/S pump. Loosen the upper and lower bolts and with a pry bar, shift the pump to tighten the belt.

Belt noise

Under the alternator is a lock bolt. Loosen the lock bolt and there is a long threaded bolt. With a socket wrench turn the bolt clockwise and the belt will tighten up. After you get the belt where you want it, tighten the lock bolt back up. The lock bolt has an unusual head on it. It will look different from the others in that area.
