Have you run Windows Update? If not, you'll need to do that before installing.
Windows Update is located in the Control Panel at the very bottom.
(Note: on Windows Vista, a prompt called the UAC prompt may come up asking if you want to allow the updates. You MUST click "Allow" or "Continue", whichever it shows, to continue)
Double click on the icon(or single click if that's how you have it set up). On the right side of the window that comes up there should be a button that says "Install Updates" Click on that and let it finish.
It could take a long time, and may need to restart your computer. Try installing AVG again after you update and let me know if that helped.
