The source of your problem is a mis-configured sources.list file. This is the file Ubuntu uses to locate and download software updates, new software, etc. It can be found at /etc/apt/sources.list You can edit this file easily with the following commands:

Alt-F2 - brings up a run command dialog box
enter: gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
enter your password when prompted

Here is my sources.list file for comparison. Note, lines beginning with # will be ignored by the update software.

How can I fix the problem of not being able to use Synaptic Package Manager or Update Manager in Linux Mint 1i KDE?

Did you run sudo dpkg --configure -a in terminal? Can you reinstall the update manager? Sounds like everything needs to be removed and reinstalled from terminal, and maybe a sudo apt-get autoremove followed by an update? It seems like the only reason synaptic and software manager wouldn't work is you've over tinkered with your os, and maybe accidentally removed something you needed for those things to run. I'm new to Linux myself, so beyond that idk. If all else fails, backup and do a fresh install to get your system back to it's original state.

My Software center, Update Manager, and Synaptic Manager can not be accessed, There are error readings and one says there is a bug, what do i do?

- From within a Terminal session, run:
# sudo apt-get update
# sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

- This does the same as running the synaptic update manager from the GUI. Learning to run your machine from a Terminal Session is always better than playing with the GUI.
- Also you should research some possible virus solutions for your machine.
- If you can, get on Google and search for "****.av" it is the anti-virus for Linux; and yes Linux is capable of getting the same issues that a PC gets.

I still cannot access my software center, i tried to fix it but the same error message keeps coming up. I tried using my Synaptic and my Update Managers but they read they same error message. Brand new at...

Open "Terminal" run:
# sudo apt-get update
"or"
# sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
These commands are used to update your system, which is always available when the GUI version will not work.

Install Google Chrome on Ubuntu

This is a guide to help you install Google Chrome on Ubuntu Hardy Heron, there are other ways, but this is the one that works for me, hope it will help you.

Ready to give it a shoot?

Step 1 - Update WINE
In order for the Chrome installation on Ubuntu to be successful you have to update your WINE version to 1.1.4.
Type (or copy) this in to your command line -
wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
sudo apt-get update

Step 2 – Get all necessary software

Winetricks is a script that will allow you to get all the necessary software you need for this installation.
The last command below will install Firefox into WINE, this is needed for the third step.

wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
mv winetricks /usr/sbin/
winetricks riched20 riched30 flash msxml3 corefonts firefox

Install Firefox into WINE.

Step 3 - Installing Chrome

Once you have installed Firefox into WINE, launch Firefox in WINE and go to - http://www.google.com/chrome/
Download and run Chrome setup.

Step 4 – Launch Google Chrome

Once the download and install are complete, type this command to launch Chrome -

wine “$HOME/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/$USER/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/Application/chrome.exe” –no-sandbox –new-http

Hope this worked for you and you can use Google Chrome off of you Ubuntu system.

How install vlc in ubuntu

Graphical way

Open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager). In Settings -> Repositories, make sure you have an universe repository activated.

Search for vlc and install it. You should install vlc-plugin-pulse/ and mozilla-plugin-vlc as well.

If you are interested in streaming or transcoding, you should additionnally install libavcodec-extra-52 from amultiverse repository.
Command line way

You need to check that a universe mirror is listed in your /etc/apt/sources.list file.
% sudo apt-get update % sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc

Cannot down load antivirus does not have control panel ubuntu linux model xg843

For Ubuntu on PC's with Gdm running, Click the System menu, then Administration, Synaptic Package Manager.
When Synaptic opens, type Anti virus in the quick search field and press Enter. If there is an antivirus for the distribution, you will see it in the list (clamav). Right click the name, select mark for installation and click Apply in the tool bar. It will be downloaded and installed.

If you are running Kdm, look for Synaptic or package manager (kpackage) and do with it as with Synaptic in GDM.
