The power supply has to have a load. There is a sense line on the ps/mb. You can purchase a ps tester from Internet vendors that will plug onto the ps connector and show if it is working on not.

My computer is only 5 years old an it just stopped working. it will show its plugged in but will not turn on at all

Hi. Kelly.
I don't know for sure that this will work, but on some computers the motherboard get stuck and doesn't allow the machine to boot up.

To try and get it going again, try this.

Unplug your computer, and disconnect your internet cable, that way there is no power going to the machine.
Next, press and hold the power button in for 30-45 seconds.
This causes the capacitors to discharge out, effectively releasing the computer, and resetting the power supply to a ready state, instead of a " wait" state.

Then connect the power cord back up and try to turn on the computer.
It may start up now if that's all that was wrong.
If not, then the power supply has probably gone out.

If that's the case, then you will need to get a replacement one....get it from Fry's, or BestBuy.
They seem to have the best prices for power supplies.
If you get a new power supply, leave the old one connected until it is time to hook the new one up, and change out plugs one at a time.
This way, you just unplug and plug back in the same plug socket.
Makes it easier this way.

I hope this helps you out....like I said, the power reset thing may or may not work, ok?

Good luck to you, and have a good day.

Hi,
It seems to be BIOS password, if you don't remember or don't have the BIOS password you have to reset the password by opening your CPU cover and removing the CMOS coin battery, this will reset the BIOS password but dont forget to return back the battery and start using your PC.

My Dell Inspiron 537s stopped working and won't turn on. There is a green light in the back when I plug it in, but the power button in the front does nothing. I am assuming it is the power supply, but...

The only way to determine if the power supply is no good without replacing it is to get a Volt Meter and test the Output on the current Power Supply. If you are getting the correct Output Voltage (correct Output Voltage may vary from computer to computer) then it is not the power supply, but if you are getting a 0V then your power supply might be damaged or blown a fuse, or just simply dead.

You can try to see if you can buy a power supply with a return policy just to see if that fixes the issue.

Please rate if this helps

What is a replacement power supply for Area 51 Desktop NPS-750AB-1 ATX power supply ??? dont sell them anymore and need a new one - please help - thanks

Just make sure that the MAX OUTPUT that should be on a sticker with all the other information directly on your power supply is the minimum output that you require on your new purchase of an ATX power supply. Your options for replacement don't really rely on the brand of power supply, it's determined more by what your power consumption is - so a good rule is to at least get one as powerful as the one you're replacing. Also make sure that the new power supply has the appropriate power connections and the amount that you need, but the outlet in which you purchase your power supply will be more than happy to give you information about all the power supplies that they have for sale.

Power Supply for HP Media Center m1270 PC

Are you sure it's the power supply?

Most modern power supply units are of the ATX type. Brand should not matter. Your PC used a 300 watt power supply when new. You can purchase a power supply with more output (watts) if you like, but not less. You will have to purchase from a computer specialty store most likely - take the dead one in and compare it side by side with the new one before buying.

What power supply is in the et1161-07? I am looking to upgrade the graphics card to a nvidia 9500, 9600, or 9800. They all require different wattages.

The power unit in question is a 250W supply unit. Nvidia series 9800 cards require 580W, the 9600 series require 300 - 400W, and 9500 series require 350W. All of these will require a new power unit. Antec is a more than adequate. Any computer shop should have a 600W unit for $100.00.

A surge protector stops power surges from eskom etc. from fryin your mother board and power supply. when the power goes off sometimes its just a phase . when all phases are off and the power comes back to all Phases instantly at a strong output this can fry your mother board or damage your power supply . surge protector keeps the power at one level even if it isnt , make sense? Also see UPS.Lightning can do the same effect too
