I bought an hp compaq desktop pc with windows xp inside. When formated to install the latest windows 7. I it lost sound. Even when reinstalled xp, still the was no sound. What did i do wrong? What must i do to fix this?

You need to call or visit hp.com and see if the video drivers support Windows 7.
If you have bought an indepentant video card ( a video card that DID NOT come with the computer), then call the manufacturer of the card or visit the vendor's website and ask for/search for any Drivers that support Windows 7.
If none of these Ideas work, you may need to replace your video card with a Windows 7 compliant video card.
You don't "format" anything. If you're on Vista, just install it. If you're on XP, you need to do a full backup of _everything_ on it, install 7, then reinstall all your programs. Windows 7 isn't as cool as all the marketing makes it out to be if you're on XP.
