My cousin has a 60 gig ps3 ,and as of yesterday its gone from moderate starup problems to major issues as of this morning ...im not sure exactly what he did , but , it started as a boot up problem ,could see the start up menu screen then it would stick ,and now its a total blank screen ... i soft reset the console multiple times with the same blank screen result ,but is there a hard reset , or is the ps3 just burned out or having major erros ?
any advice would be nice .

Re: is the playstation burned out?
Did your cousin ever connect it to an HD tv? If he did, this is a common
problem with it. If you operate the PS3 with a normal television set,
the ps3 will work fine. But when you connect it to an HD tv and hook up
the HDMI cables, the ps3 sets itself to work with HD tv's only. There
is a simple fix. a Hard Reset. Call sony customer suuport and tell them
that your ps3 doesn't have a menu screen. They will walk you through
the steps to restore your system. I would tell what to do myself if I
remembered what to do. But regardless, remember this, every time you
connect it to an HD tv and want to switch back to a normal tv set, you
will have to hard reset the system. Try to remember the sequence the
first time so that any other time this happens you'll know what to do.

Please provide more detail on your issue. What do the lights do in the front of the PS3? Most likely it is an issue where the Ps3 needs to be reflowed.
This problem happens with some of the PS3's and it is a motherboard issue. The PS3 motherboard needs to be reflowed using a reflow station. I have one of these stations on it's way to be able to fix this issue if you still have this problem. You can contact me at email@example.com for more details.
Same thing happened to my first PS3 about a week after i got it, called PS3 tech support to troubleshoot but did not work, they decided to send me a warranty replacement, I havent had an issue with my new PS3. I recommend you do the same
actuallly a lot of ps2 games can be played with the HDMI connected. I do it all the time... however yes the 60 gig will not play every ps2 game and there is a whole slew of the 60 gigs that are not backwards compatable at all. check it out on wikipedia's page on the ps3.
I haven't had a problem with any ps2 game yet, and the only ps game that I own that hasn't played on my ps3 is FF8.
