Question about Samsung 250GB HD250HJ SATA II 300 7200rpm 8MB cache HDD Hard Disk Drive oem HD250HJ 250 GB SATA Hard Drive

The HDD speed suddenly droped

I have a SAMSUNG 256GB HD250HJ SATA II hdd with two partitions. It is about 8 month old.

Two days ago this problem appeared:
When starting PC (XP SP3 installed) the OS loading speed dropped from around 1 min to 5-10min random starting time.

Did not installed any software that could have done this in this time.

Had a virus warning with Avira Free (known to deliver many false alarms) but when checked with Bitdefender 10.0 (updated every 5 hours) offline scanner did not detect any. Since that (around 5 days ago) no other virus warning or virus found by any of the two antivirus softwares.

Another thing that is not normal: sometimes (rarely) I get the no boot drive when starting the PC even if the BIOS detects the HDD. Please tell me what could this be because I really need to use the PC at full power and speed.

Thank you in advance,
Cristian

I did not put to test the HDD on another computer but I made some tests with the other HDD . it is a MAXTOR SATA 500GB 32MB cache. speed from maxtor to maxtor is around 32MB/s but from maxtor to samsung it begins around 17MB/s but after the windows cache empties sudenly drops to 900KB-1500KB wich is slower even than my internet connection and it is not ok.

the problem was indeed the SATA cable, for some reason it was a flaw. after I tried another cable all work fine.

Try placing the hd in another computer, see if it is the HD or something else.

You may need to address the way that the old HDD was used in the BIOS. Meaning that if you had regular IDE drive the setting that may be in the BIOS might need to bee disabled and that could be the cause to the new SATA IDE controller you have installed as a boot device. Also if you are trying to boot from you new SATA drive you will need to install some form of and operating system on it like windows or whatever you have been using.

Sometimes it’s easier to create a disk image of the old drive and transfer it to you new SATA, using a disk image utility like Norton Ghost.

Of course I am assuming that you are using a PC and not a MAC.

most likely it is getting ready to crash, remove your files and replace the HD very quickly.

Try:

Have you got a decent spinup?

Are the rest of the drives working properly, if they are not it may suggest faulty PSU.

Try connecting to a diffrent pc, or purchase a USB sata convertor

Samsung 200gb hdd

When u bought a new hdd, it shud not have any partition on it. but in ur case, I assume u have formatted it to ntfs but no operating system is installed in it.

If u want to make the new hdd as slave and have another old hdd as primary, that have already an operating system installed in it, then the problem shud be hdd boot priority in bios. Enter ur bios and check for hdd boot priority and put the old hdd to the top most order, then restart. this shud fix the problem.

If u installed OS in ur new hdd (win xp),
1) ntldr or ntdetect.com is missing on root dir. (c:\). If u have another computer that works and have xp installed, just put this new hdd along with the current hdd and boot to windows. Copy ntldr and ntdetect.com to your new hdd. Or another way is just repair using windows xp boot cd.
2)the windows partition is not set 'active'. to set active, boot into winxp setup and press 'r'. this will lead to recovery console. type ur passwrod for admin (def=none). use diskpart command to set active. for easy way, put the new hdd to another computer. boot to windows. rightclick my computer, choose manage. on left pane select disk manager. rightclick on ur partition, then set active.

Hope this help

Samsung 250GB HD250HJ

Hey, congratulations on successfully installing the harddive.

Since its brand new, there is no volume in the disk (no partition and not formated)

To create a new volume and format the disk for the first time

on desktop, right click my computer icon, select manage from the menu, on the left side of the management window click on disk management

now on the right side, find your new harddrive, right click on it (its most likely the drive 1)

so right click on the 250gb hdd, create new volume, use NTFS default settings, and you may use quick format. normal format will take from 15 minutes to a hour or more.

with quick format the disk will be useable within seconds.

after this is complete you will see a new disk in my computer.
