Generally, you will remove the battery from the laptop (Important!). Near the battery connector, there will be a small jumper on two or three pins. If there are two pins remove the jumper, count to ten, put the jumper back. If there are three pins, place the jumper to connect the other pin to the center pin, count a few seconds, move the connector back. This may require removing the cover on the laptop. Caution is recommended if you have never done this before. You could contact Compaq (HP) and ask for the backdoor password. After you give the serial number of the laptop, they may provide it. There is software out there for this purpose. Look for 'clearing the bios password' on the 'net
