Question about Apple Power Mac G3 Desktop

Power Mac g3 (B/W)

I have a Mac that I really want to get fixed. 450mhz processor, 1/4 gig ram, 4 gig HD, DVD RAM. The problem is it turns on and just that. The only times it makes noise is when I take out the RAM and when I hold the updater button. What do I need to do? Get a new battery, probably?

Both times it makes a single frequency tone. the "No ram" tone is 1 second long, the "Updater button" is 2-3 seconds long.

HAHA... I answered my own question. Do you know where to get one? Lasts the logest and the least expensive? I dobut Radio
Shack, because I hear they're $7+ apiece and last only 1/2 year.

thanks. I'll see what I can do.

I'll put FixYa when I get the battery. If there is another problem, it'll be on another page.

Fair chance this is a Hardware failure. Unfortunately, this could range from simple and cheap all the way up to Hard and expensive. Possible culprits. 1. Bad RAM. 2. Bad Video Card. 3. Bad Processor 4. Bad MLB. First to find out if it is a HW problem, you need to isolate the software/Data from the hardware. Get another HD and install an OS onto it and boot to it. if the problem persists on the new OS, then it is almost guaranteed to be a HW issue. Isolating the specific HW is Challenging without diagnostic software. RAM would be the easiest and cheapest to fix. if you have any new or 3rd party RAM, take it out. if not divide and concur by swapping out the remaining RAM. try all configurations your system will allow (depends on model and how much RAM you have) next is to try the video card/cards. if you only have one, see if you can find one from another computer or something. if you have 2, pull one, and see if you are still affected, swap. if things are pointing to a MLB or Processor... take it to an apple store. Hate giving that as a solution, but they are equipped with the diagnostic software.

PMG5 powers on, but power lite doesn't stay on. No chime, no video, no boot

The ram might not be the right one. The ram that you put on there must be apple.

Video ram error 2ATI/1/4:113-A14404-118 in Apple hardware test Power Mac G5 DP 2,5 ATI Radeon 9800 XT

This one is pretty clear. Your machine is a June, 2004 model. Your video RAM is bad. Video RAM is not user-replaceable on the Radeon 9800 XT, so you will have to replace the Radeon card itself.

IMac G3 Not Starting

Hey, RexKing:

Your problem is hard to diagnose with your current description without knowing where the clicking sound is coming from or exactly what it sounds like, but most likely the problem resides either with the power supply or its connection to the circuit boards. If you have access to any scrapped G3 iMacs to cannibalize for parts at an E-recycling depot, you can probably find just about anything you need, as long as you get the right model, as they changed key components a few times, but, like cars, a lot of parts cross over. The exact model description is on the bottom in really fine print.

In any case, you will have to take it apart to check out the power supply and/or other components, which is a bit tricky without a guide. You can find a really comprehensive Apple iMac G3 service document, for many of the later models, posted at this URL as an 11 Mb PDF file:

Only catch is that to download it you need to sign up for a free SCRIBD account. (It's a document sharing co-op site.) Hopefully this won't result in years of spam. Good luck, and if you figure out the cause, please let me know. (I have about a dozen iMac G3s that I am gradually refurbishing.)

Videos play slow and choppy but sound is ok

The video is choppy because your computer is not powerful enough to decode the video. The imac g3 was a great computer in its day but it was never designed to run the graphically intensive programs of today. OS 10.4 already places a lot of demands on an older machine. Adding youtube video only exasperates the problem as there simply isn't enough processing power or memory to run the pretty aqua user interface of OS 10.4 and decode video at the same time.

Adding more ram may help (256 MB is not very much these days) but truth be told I don't think you will see much of an improvement given the low power of the G3 processor. Sorry to say it, but if you want to watch flash videos (youtube) with any level of reliability you are going to have to look for a newer machine. You probably could find a used imac g5 for a good price on ebay or maybe treat yourself to a new imac. Rumour has it Apple will be coming out with a new model in the next few days (weeks) so keep on eye out for that if your thinking of buying new.
