Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRTP54G Router

1 Answer

Multiple laptops... router only connects with one?

I have 4 laptops. 1 Linksys Wireless-G WRTP54G router.
The whole concept of 'network' implies that I should be able to connect to the router with all 4 of them...

- When I connect directly to the cable modem, I can get to the internet.
- One laptop is able to connect to the Router, it shows it is connected. But it seems not to the cable modem, as I have no internet connection.
- The same laptop was able to connect to the router and to the cable modem and then the internet earlier. I believe I accomplished that by turning off and on again the router and the cable modem.
- In between, and I suspect this to be the cause of the issue I used tow of the other laptops to connect to the router and/or directly to the cable modem.

So, in short the cable modem works, the router also works, sometimes the router and the modem work together and I have wireless access.

The problem seems to be in the use of multiple laptops and the switching back and forth between them.

I have the feeling I have to change a setting in the Router itself or just do a complete new set up. but do not know how to get in... I cannot find the IP address of the Router and am not sure if I need a special application to get in.

Type into IE your routers web address 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1, i forget which yours is; then you will be prompted for a username and password, the username is usually blank and the password is admin, unless you have changed it.

When in the settings look for DHCP and make sure it is enabled to automatically assign ip addreses to all pc and check that all the pc's are set to obtain an ip address automatically

I need to secure my router just for my home , right now it is open so anyone can use it .

you can use the website here:

http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRTP54G

click on the tab that is labeled "guide me" and type in "wireless security"

The web based application will ask you a few multiple choice questions based on what you want to accomplish.

If the web based help does not live up to your expectations, the manual is also available from the same page on the "downloads" tab.

I am trying to find my WPA address for my linksys wrtp54g. How do I find this?

Unfortunately since the key is masked on your router even when looking at it physcally on the router, you would not be able to determine the key. The easiest thing to do is to change the key and match it with what you configure on your laptop.

Follow step 6 on this link to create a new key (but choosing WPA instead of WEP):

The wireless network is broadcasting but it will

Howdy,

Sounds like you may have an encryption problem. Are you running an open or secure network? Try setting it to Security > Disabled and see if you can get on. (Please note where you were before you disable the security) This will be under the Wireless > Wireless Security tab. If you can connect after disabling the security then you probably did not enter you key code correctly. OR... You may have set it to a level of encryption that your wireless laptop does not support. (Don't know the age of the laptop - some older ones will support WEP only and "b" only.) Make sure that you are broadcasting in both "b" & "g" ranges and if WPA won't work for you, then try WEP. It is a little difficult for me to tell you exactly what to do because I do not have all the necessary information but perhaps this will help. The main thing is to disable the security first and see if you can connect. If you can, then this is a BIG clue and good news. Then you know it is an encryption issue.

Typically the encryption choices are WPA - WPA-PSK - WPA2 - WPA2-PSK - RADIUS & WEP. I would recommend WPA-PSK with TKIP for normal "modern" applications. If your WRTP54G has the Auto Security setup button on the front of the router you may want to use it to automatically set up your wireless security. You can tell by feeling the raised rectangular push button on the front panel.

Good Luck!
