My laptop was starting up ok, but kept freezing when trying to access any programs, after re starting it seemed fine, but all my internet favourites have disappeared - not a major problem, but main thing is all my photo folders have gone - bad times, is there any way I can get them back?

Keeps freezing. On restart wireless internet doesn't work. It is less than a year old and has no viruses.

try uninstalling a few unnecessary programs as for the internet you might have too many trying to access the net at the same time then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive then defragment your hard drive
hope this helps

I have a problem with Adobe 9 on a new computer running Windows 7. In any browser with a pdf page, Adobe brings up a window with a question mark and OK box after which it goes blank or black and freezes.

I have fixed the problem by opening adobe going into accessibility setup assisstant and Set Adobe to not display in the browser under Adobe's internet settings. seems to working fine now.
Or can can try to install adobe again (just repair it when it asks)
Or you can install Foxit - another PDF reader that isn't as bloated as Adobe.

I've been trying to connect to my work e-mail from home. My employer allowed staff to have access from other computers. I've had access since February of 2006. Recently my son upgraded windows to windows 8...

You can do either of two things:
In Internet Explorer, choose [Internet Options] under the [Tools] menu selection.
[Advanded] tab
scroll down to the "Security' section
UN-check the "Warn about invalid site certificates"
[OK] [OK] [OK]
close and restart Internet Explorer.

#2:
If not satisfied with iE8, you can un-install it and the previous version that you had will re-install itself (and keep all your favorites, etc. intact).
[Start] [Control Panel]
[Add/Remove Programs]
Scroll most of the way down to [Windows Internet Explorer 8]
[Remove]

try doing a system restore on it. To tell You the truth I can't stand Norton because if You miss one of the updates it just doesn't seem to work. I had Norton a long time ago and got rid of it. All My family and friends that had it got rid of theirs also. Hope that helps You out. You can contact Me at randwlekfield@charter.net if You have more questions.

My computer freezes for no apparent reason :(

thanks for the details

something you need to know is that freeze ups (intermittent ones) are hard to diagnose.. and it may require to swap some with known good ones to determine what the problem is

this is what I would start with.

1. if you're new to the computer.. check for viruses and malware in general or better yet do a clean reisntall of the os. (it problably would be faster particularly if you don't have any info on it since you're using it for games) then test your games and see how it behaves... if the problem is fixed.. you may have had a software issue or simply malware or some virus.

2. you did a clean install and it kept freezing up on you (that's when it gets interesting).
you suspect it could be something related with internet... check the network updater:

couple of things you can try:
a. if the network adapter is onboard: check for new drivers then test if it does not work disable the adapter in device manager and test... run some games of the harddisk or the cd/dvd drive and see how it behaves..
b. if the network adapter is a pci card..check for new drivers then test if it does not work uninstall from device manager and uninstall card phisically and test running some games off the hdd or cd/dvd drive, (feel free to try to use your onboard network adapter if avaliable.. don't forget to enable this one if it was disabled on bios) and test

3. if you're a gamer and your old pal (the one that got you the computer was one too) you very likely have a good video card on your system.. check for new drivers then test if it does not work uninstall and then use onboard video adapter and test...

4. you tried 2 and it kept happening... first thing I would do is do some checking on the memory: if you have 2 sticks of memory.. run the computer with one memory stick at a time and test (one memory stick at a time)

if it only has 1 memory stick.. get a new memory stick and test the system with the new memory stick.

5. check your hard drive (it may be getting old)... download a program called speed fan and check the startus of your hdd and the the online comparison (if it doesn't freeze up on you).

6. if you got upto here... things are not looking good.. you may have a problem with the motherboard or even your cpu... I would do some monitoring with task manager... check and see if by creating some stress on your cpu usage (open, close, run programs).. you can duplicate the freeze up).. at this time you may to think on replacing either one of those components.. been more likely your motherboard... but only way to find out would be swaping components for know good components..

have fun and let me know how it turns out.

When i turn on my notebook and try to connect to the internet or any program it freezes

Hi, first check if you here the CPU fan under your laptop that start as soon as you power your laptop. If not the problem may be that your CPU is getting hot and freeze your laptop. If this the case try opening your laptop to see if the fan is disconnected or bad. If bad then try looking for one in eBay or something like that whit the specific laptop brand and model. Let's us know. Thanks Obed

Reinstall the Internet Explorer, that will help.
U can reinstall Internet Explorer by clicking on start, control panel, add/remove programs, add/remove windows components, remove a checkmark next to Internet Explorer.
Then restart the computer.
Again go to start, control panel, add/remove programs, add/remove windows components, put a checkmark next to Internet Explorer.
Then apply, ok and again restart the computer.
Try to connect to internet and then check.
It will not close again.
Its possible that something might have been downloaded accidently and that is interfering with the internet.
It should work.
Otherwise, go to start, run, msconfig, startup, disable all, apply, ok and he restart the computer.
It will block some programs that may interfere with ur Wireless Internet Access.
It will work.
