Question about Zebra Stripe S600 Thermal Label Printer

Printhead light comes on

The printer seems to load correctly but after the first job is sent the paper\ribbon light comes on. We use the thermal transfer (no ribbon). I have reset, recalibrated the printer, done the media calibration and printed out a configuration successfully (after the configuration prints the paper/ribbon light comes on). I have cleaned the print head and the printing looks very good on the label that does print. Our print jobs are two labels and on the printed label before the light comes on it will print on the label then feed a few labels and then print the last before the light comes on. The print jobs themselves haven't changed in years. I'm at a loss. Thank you in advance for your help.

We replaced the printer with another printer of the exact same model and this doesn't happen. This indicates a hardware problem. Is there somewhere we can get replacement parts and what part do you think is the issue.

Does epson tm-t88iiip have a ribbon

No. thermal printers do not use ribbons or ink cartridges. They have thermal heads that heat up and use that heat to print on the specially treated, heat sensitive paper rolls. If the printer has stopped printing, check to see if the paper is thermal and loaded correctly (shiny side facing the front when it feeds).

The button becomes red once I print a test page

The red light means out of paper or ink ribbon. Some people chose not to use the ink ribbon and get thermal direct paper which requires no ink ribbon but The red light means out of paper or ink ribbon. Some people chose not to use the ink ribbon and get thermal direct paper which requires no ink ribbon but the printer has to be told by the driver not to expect ribbon or the red light will come on. Also not having the correct paper height set in the driver will make the red light come on as well so check the advanced tab in the properties of the driver then click printing defaults. In the ZDesigner driver height and width are entered there. In the zebra universal, its the same path but one extra click. Click paper output and enter the size.

Zebra 140 thermal printer

Hello, mmgarcia10.

I've dealt with Zebra 140's for a lot of years. It's best to start with the easy fixes, so please don't take offense if I ask you to check obvious probelms.

I'm assuming you use a ribbon (as opposed to direct thermal paper). When replacing ribbon, it's easy to slide the spool on facing the wrong way.

Can you verify that the ribbon is loaded with the ink facing down? The back of the ribbon is probably shiny and should face up. The ink side is dull and ink can probably be scraped off by your fingernail. The ribbon on the spindle should unwind clockwise, not counter-clockwise. If you're familiar with cleaning the printhead, this would be a good time; if not skip the cleaning for now to avoid damage.

If the ribbon was loaded OK, the next thing I'd check is the printhead pressure. The are two posts with thumbscrews located above the printhead. The thumbscrews press against springs that in turn apply a small amount of pressure to the printhead. Each post has two thumbsrews that can be tightened toword each other to lock the position. Labels and ribbons can be a little tricky to load, and sometimes these posts can slide to the side by mistake. A good rule of thumb is to position these above the left and right sides of the label. Don't apply too much pressure, or the printhead will wear out faster, and printheads are exensive. If one side prints light and one side dark, give the light side a little more pressure.

If the labels still don't print, turn the printer off and then on (to reset the main board).

I can't remember if the Z140 can print a configuration page or test print if you hold down the Feed button while turning on the power. It's so easy it's worth a try. I know you can print one by navigating through the front panel. If the label doesn't print, it's probably a hardware problem. I've never seen a ribbon cable work loose from a printhead, but if you can find the connector, you can jiggle it a little and press it in to try to reseat the pins.

If the config page prints but labels from your software don't, you could check the darkness setting in you software, and also in the printer driver (right click the printer name, and choose something like Printing Preferences). There's also a darkness setting stored in the printer that can be set through the front panel, but this is often over-ridden by label software.

Hope this helps,
Label_Guy

Zebra s600

The factory default setting for the S600 is thermal transfer (ribbon). depending on your OS there is a command that can be echoed to the printer to change the setting to direct transfer (non ribbon). It sounds like your printer thinks is should use a ribbon and in fact you are not using a ribbon. Here is the procedure I use to get the ribbon motor to turn on:
1. start with the printer turned off.
2. open the printhead, retract the ribbon completely onto the supply spool. leave the printhead open.
3. Press and hold the top three buttons (PAUSE, FEED and CANCEL) while turning on the printer. When the botom couple lights turn off release the buttons.
4. When you are left with the power light on and the printhead light blinking reinstall the ribbon and close the printhead.

The printer will autoclaibrate and run a sensor test.
Once complete the take up motor should have turned on and you should be able to use thermal transfer labels and a ribbon.

Ribbon error 754

Your printer is not correctly configured for ribbon. Download the manual located at ftp://www.servisource1.com/user_documentation/9855/9855oh-ae.pdf

Go to chapter 4-1 to see the map of the menu system and change your printer to ribbon yes.

Make sure that your printer is loaded with supplies and the ribbon is set up correctly, as well as slack taken out.

You may see a couple of labels not print well, but after that, you shold have proper tension and good print. If you notice a lot of ribbon wrinkle, you probably need to reload your ribbon or adjust the tension bars.

This should resolve any issue you have with the ribbon.
