Rear speed sensor fails at higher speeds. ecm cant tell what gear to go to and abs looses rear wheel speed. When you start over it sees speed till it hits the higher speed. Been there done that. :-)

ABS/Parking Brake?Service Engine Lights are on But Runs Great

Does ABS work properly? Get on dirt road and try to lock brakes (do this carefully insuring no police car tailgating, lol) Could be bad wheel speed sensor. Check codes with scan tool capable of reading ABS and trans codes.

Abs light is on ?

There is also the chance that a piece of brake pad has broken and is jamming the brake, creating resistence that the engine must fight. This will temporarily affect the shifts because the wheels do not want to turn freely. Its like driving with the Parking brakes on.

Some cars have a default Mode which keeps you from going fast if the brake sensors show a problem.

I would go to a Brake shop first. Someone at a transmission shop may try to sell you a transmission when you don't need one. Finding out if the wheels turn freely and if you need brake work will go a long way to cancel the ABS light. Some ABS systems have computer hookups with self-diagnostics just like the engine management does.

But if only 1 of the brakes is bad, you will need to replace the axle pair and do at least 1 end of the car, if not all the brakes.

Sounds like your Front Rotors are warped, did you take off your rotors and check them for trueness? It could be a broken or worn Transmission or Engine Mount.

2003 Mercedes E320 chugging occasionally when coasting at 2-3 mph. Is this a transmission related issue or computer or brakes or other?

Might be anything, in my case was a faulty ABS anti-lock-braking system, but the ABS light went on. At 25 MPH everything turned OK, ABS light was still ON.

ANTI-LOCK AND PARKING BRAKE LIGHT

Any code's stored in the ABS ? The VSS - vehicle speed sensor is an input to the PCM - engine computer . The PCM sends this info. on the class 2 serial data network to the instrument cluster . The Instrument cluster has a microprocessor that deciphers all relevant data , speedometer , tach , fuel level , temp. etc... an through the use of stepper motors controls the gauges . Do you know what a module serial data network is ? Do you know what computer controlled systems on a automobile are ? The ABS - anti lock brakes need speed info. also , as does the transmission for shifting point's . The parking brake light is more then just to let you know the parking brake is set . ABS problems , low fluid level in the master cylinder will also turn on this light . Having the vehicle hooked up to a professional type scanner should be the first step in the diagnostic process . Check DTC'S , view sensor data parameters .

Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
The IPC displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 100°F (40°C) or below if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.

PRNDL Display
The IPC displays the selected gear position as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the gear position. The PRNDL displays blank if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the transmission range switch circuit.
• The IPC receives a class 2 message indicating the park position and the column park switch indicates a position other than park such as an open input.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.
Speedometer
The IPC displays the vehicle speed based on the information from the PCM. The PCM converts the data from the vehicle speed sensor to a 4000 pulses/mile signal. The IPC uses the vehicle speed signal circuit from the PCM in order to calculate the vehicle speed. The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) if a malfunction in the vehicle speed signal circuit exists.

Tachometer
The IPC displays the engine speed based on the information from the PCM. The PCM converts the data from the engine speed sensor to a 2 pulses/engine revolution signal. The IPC uses the engine speed signal circuit from the PCM in order to calculate the engine speed. The tachometer defaults to 0 rpm if a malfunction in the engine speed signal circuit exists.

You could have any one of a number of different thing's causing your problem . Hooking up a scanner probably would point to the gremlin .
