Question about Sony STR-DE197 Receiver

1 Answer

Sony receiver does not change components

My Sony STR-DE197 receiver has been sitting unplugged all summer with the rest of my school stuff (I teach HS biology). I took it to school and set it up just as I did last year. It worked perfecly the first day I set it up (last Friday). This morning (Monday) when I arrived at school to organize my room I turned it on and tried to select Tuner. It would not change components from Video 1. If I hold the Tuner component button in on the receiver, it changes to tuner. When I release the button it switches back to video 1. I changed the batteries in my remote to see if weak batteries might be affecting the reciever, but that did not make any difference. Any ideas what's going on?

Check to be sure that none of the buttons are stuck on. With the unit off, press each of the buttons. You should be able to feel the button engage. If they all feel like they are working, the internal switch itself may be shorted in the closed position.

Update this with what you find.

Can I assume that you did not find a switch stuck? If so, the next step would be to check the switching IC inside the unit. This is a TC9163 for this model I believe. If this chip has failed, it can exhibit this symptom as well.

I have a constant "crackling" noise in the left channel. I've replaced all 4 power transistors. The crackling is still there. Any clues?

Look for an open resistor in that channel. could be the large emitter resistor, or one of the low-ohm flame-proof resistors.

Unit won't turn on. There's power to the outlet but the reciever just won't light up! Sony STR-DE 197 It's only a couple of years old and shows no damage.

Failure of the the power source. To see if it's fixable the receiver will have to be opened and the power board tested . This job requires at least a basic experience in electronics - if you don't posses it all you can do is to look for a burned fuse or damaged capacitors. For them follow this

The protect light comes on and cuts sounds

There is a short or an overload. Check the speaker connections, and if there is a defective speaker. If the speakers are okay, there may be a failure in the amplifier circuits. This will require shop service if it is an internal problem.

It sounds like the switch might be OK mechanically but not electrically. Have a look to see if you can check the connections on the switch. Perhaps there is a broken or loose or bad solder joint.

I have a Sony STR-DE197 Stereo Receiver that I got used. It isn't a very old receiver. It sounds really nice except for the fact that it makes a static noise in the background. I have no idea what it is or...

Could be a faulty grounding. Do all the components do this? Usually turntables will have a buzzing noise if you don't hook it up to the ground bolt but I'm going to take a guess that maybe the amplifier isn't being grounded itself.
