Even though Windows XP and 7 are different versions of Windows, you can still connect a computer running Windows 7 to an XP computer using Remote Desktop Connection. Remote Desktop Connection is a utility in Windows that allows you to log in to a remote computer directly from your computer's desktop. However, before you can use the utility on your Windows 7 computer, you must enable it on the Windows XP computer. To connect to the Windows XP computer, you also need to know the XP computer's name.
Instructions
Enable Remote Desktop on the Windows XP Computer
- Click "Start" on the Windows XP computer, and then right-click "My Computer."
- Click "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
- Click the "Remote" tab, and then click the "Allow Users to Connect Remotely to This Computer" check box.
- Click "OK" to confirm the change when prompted on the pop-up window. Click "OK" on the open windows to close them.
Connect to the Windows XP Computer
- Click "Start" on the Windows 7 computer, and then type "Remote Desktop Connection" in the search box. Press "Enter."
- Click "Remote Desktop Connection" from the results list.
- Type the name of the XP computer in the "Computer" box, and then click "Connect" to connect to the XP computer.
