Question about Sony Audio & Video Receivers

2 Answers

I want to play mp3 music on a standard hi-fi kit. I have a Sony Vaio VGC-TP media centre with an S/PDIF optical output. I am intending to buy a Cambridge Audio amplifier and a couple of bookshelf speakers. Can you tell me what kit I need to connect the PC to the amp to give the highest quality sound? I think I probably need a digital to analogue converter, but there are few around in my price range. Looking forward to hewaring from you. Martin Evans

I hooked up the str-dg600 to my SoundMax audio card via optical TOSLINK cable. I cant get the subwoofer or surround speakers to sound. and the center channel only makes sound when both left and right speakers are turned up in the test program. Surround back never works either

HI,all you need to do is hook up the optical out put to the optical in on the amp this will give you the best sound, also try phono out of media centre if you have it as this has a higher band width.

HOPE THIS HELPS.

Playing music from my computer into my tx-ds494 it has been cutting out into a really loud fuzzy noise like when your between radio stations

Sound like a poor connection to me. Verify the integrity of the cable on some different equipment if possible. Use some electrical contact cleaner such as DeOxit or Servisol Super 10 on the cable connectors and also in the computer audio output. Spray cleaner on the jack and then push in and out of the socket several times to scrub the connectors.

If you are using built in sound from a PC, it may be worth getting an external audio interface as the standard internal ones are not known for their hi-fi sound!

I have lost my remote control of Sony-MHC-GN1100D, Kindly help me from where & what rate I can buy this in mumbai,India,as the sony service centre is hell

Hi
Sony remote controls can be bought from the Authorised Service Centers for Sony, and some of the electronic spare part shops at your town. It will have a model number, usually printed either on its back cover or inside the slip off battery protection lid. If you intend to buy it from service centers, just give the the exact model number of your receiver. They will give you the original one. If you go to buy from local market, give the the model number of the remote control itsef, as I indicated earlier. From open market, you will get Chinese make only. OK.

Why not? Standard a/v devices without secret proprietary connectors always work with like products.

To a point. It only accepts analog stereo input and creates digital optical audio and stereo analog audio outputs.

Don't take that MD(Video) label literally. It's a standard analog stereo audio (ONLY) RCA output pair. The label is meaningless. It should say AUX for all it does.

How do you connect an ipod or mp3 to the waC700 wireless music centre?

Anything that has a headphone output can be adapted to feed an RCA cable pair for standard stereo to any audio device with a standard RCA input. Get a cable like the one described here:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2

and connect it into any available analog input EXCEPT "Phono". Turn the MP3 player volume up.

At the rear of the Yamaha, on the left side, you will see 3 connectors for Digital input - the 2 one is specifically set for an HD tv / DTV. Buy a optical cable like
http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Toslink-Digital-Optical-Meters/dp/B001TH7GSW/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1297066417&sr=1-2
and connect it between the tv output and the receiver then select it as a source from the menu . Now you will have sound.

How do I get my Samsung TV audio to output though my onkyo tx-sr608?

If it is a relatively new TV you should use an optical digital audio cable. These are often called "toslink" cables. Plug one end into the "digital audio out" port of your TV, and the other into a free toslink port on the receiver (there are two on the back and a third on the front of the 608).
You should then change the settings on your samsung tv to: - turn the digital audio (s/pdif) output on - allow bitstream output over s/pdif - turn the tv speaker off I am not sure which model Samsung you have, so I can't go into great detail, but I'm sure you will be able to find the relevant settings, most likely under "sound" in your system menu.

lastly, you will probably want to use the input assign page of the onkyo on-screen menu to assign whichever input you use to your TV, and change its name accordingly.

Hi,
This is a common problem. Each input will default to analog. Even though you have plugged an optical cable into the inputs of the Receiver, you have to change that input to digital.
For example, if you connect a CD player RCA cables to the Receiver. The receiver will recognize the Analog signal at the CD input. If you unplug the Analog RCA Cables and plug in the Digital optical, the receiver will still be at it's normal default input for the CD player which is Analog. You then have to switch the input, using either the remote or it may be able to be done with the buttons on the front.
As soon as it is changed to Digital, you will get nice sound.
Hope this helps,
Happy New Year,
Mark

Getting the best out of my Sony STR DE-475

Yes, it would downgrade.

Simply run an HDMI cable to the LCD from the DVD player. Now, use the digital audio output of the DVD player to run to the receiver. I know the Sony has an optical input which i recommend over the coaxial input as the optical cable doesnt waste any energy as a medium transferring sound since its only light.

Dolby True HD

I don't think TrueHD can be passed over s/pdif. I think it requires HDMI (1.3) audio or 8 RCA outs/ins.
