Re: Compaq Armada E500 laptop
It looks like your keyboard is wrongly configured, go to control panel, keyboard and set it to standar (101 or 102) keyboard. Also check your local (regional and language) settings are set to correct country.

most hp/compaq laptops will have memory slots located under the keyboard, and sometimes an additional memory slot accessed through a panel on the bottom of the notebook. In your case, you have 2 memory slots located under the keyboard. Officially, this unit only supports up to 256 mb memory modules for a maximum of 512 MB of memory so if you already have that, be aware that larger capacity memory modules may not work.
Ok this laptop only takes SDram
The location of the ram is under the keyboard
Here's the instructions on how to get to it.
First shut down the laptop and disconnect any cables or whatever that is connected to it.
Then turn the computer over there is a security screw there remove that by turning counter clockwise.
Then take a paper clip and put it into the 4 keyboard releases which should be
1. right of the ESC key
2. between the F4 and F5 key
3.between the F8 and F9 key
4. right of the F12 key
Now you can lift the keyboard by tilting it up closest to the LCD towards you.
You will see a empty memmory slot which should be 1.
Put it in at a 45 degree angle and push down gently till it snaps in place.
Now you just reverse the way you took it apart and you should be all set
Per the user manual, the brightness is toggled by holding the Fn Key and pressing F10. You post made no reference to the Fn Key being pressed. If using an external keyboard press scroll lock twice then F10.
